When does morning sickness end

Morning sickness usually eases by about 16 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, though some people feel it longer. It can strike at any hour, not only in the morning.

Time By Online Alarm Clock

when does morning sickness end

NHS guidance says it often begins between the 4th and 7th week and usually settles by 16 to 20 weeks. That window is counted in pregnancy weeks, not in calendar seasons. A person who conceived in January and a person who conceived in July use the same week numbers. Winter does not end the nausea. Summer does not start it. The trimester clock does.

The name is a poor map. Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy can arrive on waking, in the afternoon, at night, or in more than one stretch of the same day. Ending “in the morning” is not the test. Ending across the day is. Some people notice a fade near the end of the first trimester. Others still feel it well into the stretch NHS names as 16 to 20 weeks. A later fade is not a personal failure of the name.

Ordinary nausea and vomiting of pregnancy is common. NHS notes that it is not shown to harm the baby. That is not the same as saying it is easy to live with. Eat and drink as you can, rest when you can, and talk to a midwife or doctor if you cannot keep fluids down. This page cannot treat you. It can only name the usual clock.

Trimesters are not calendar seasons

The first trimester is roughly the first 13 weeks. The second runs from there through about 27 weeks. Those are pregnancy seasons, not winter and summer. Morning sickness is tied to the early pregnancy stretch, when hormone levels are changing fast. NHS points at those early weeks as the usual setting. The outdoor season you are dressed for is a separate fact. It can change which meals and smells you meet. It does not rewrite the week number.

If you are in northern winter at week 8, short days and heavy indoor cooking smells are the backdrop. If you are in northern summer at week 8, heat and different food smells are the backdrop. Either backdrop can feel worse. Neither one is a diagnosis. Do not wait for a change of month to decide whether the nausea is “supposed” to have finished. Wait for the week count, and for how you actually feel.

Usual start: about weeks 4 to 7, not a named month on the wall. Usual ease: about weeks 16 to 20 for many pregnancies, not a change of weather. Any hour: morning is a nickname, not a curfew on the nausea.

Any calendar season: the trimester is the clock, not autumn or spring. Morning sickness is named for a time of day it does not have to keep. The week of pregnancy is the clock that matters.

When it lasts past twenty weeks

Some people still feel sick after 20 weeks. Some feel sick until birth. That is a known pattern, not a puzzle you caused. If vomiting is so frequent that you cannot eat or drink normally, that is a different condition: hyperemesis gravidarum. It can lead to dehydration and needs medical care. Contact a midwife, GP, or maternity unit rather than waiting for a later season of the pregnancy to fix it.

New nausea after about 11 weeks, especially if pregnancy was previously comfortable, is treated in clinical notes as a reason to look for another cause. That is a caution, not a home diagnosis. Sudden severe pain, bleeding, or an inability to keep any fluid down is a reason to seek care the same day, in whatever month the calendar is showing.

Practical steps NHS often lists are small meals, rest, water, and bland food. Some people find ginger helpful; some do not. None of those steps is a promise that week 16 will be the last nauseous week. They are supports while the pregnancy clock runs. If a clinician offers medicine, that is their job, not a calendar’s.
