How it works

A wheel of names random picker is a list with a round picture on top. You paste names, the wheel cuts a slice per name, and a spin lands on one slice. If every name has one slice of the same size, every name has the same chance. If you paste a name twice, that person has two slices. The pointer, the colors, and the sound are presentation. The roster is the draw.

Load living names. A wheel that still holds last term’s class will pick last term’s class. Remove people who left. Add people who arrived. Spell the names the way the people spell them, so the room can identify the winner without a debate about nicknames. A blank wheel cannot pick a volunteer. A wheel of leftovers cannot pick the people in the chairs.

Decide replacement before anyone leans in. With replacement, the winner stays on the wheel and can win the next spin at once. That fits a quick prompt, a joke round, or a repeating chore for the next five minutes. Without replacement, the winner comes off until the wheel is empty. That fits a speaking order, a prize, or a team draft. Changing the rule after you saw the name is how a fair picker becomes a negotiation.

Make the slices match the room

Write the pool out loud if more than one person has to trust it. A classroom, a meetup, and a family gift exchange are three different hats. Agree who is eligible. Agree whether the host is in. Agree what happens if the winner is absent.

Enter each eligible person once. Leave out everyone who should not win, including a host who opted out. Say unique winners or repeats allowed, then spin. Read the name aloud and mark it if it should not return.

Weighted slices are a different game. Enlarging a slice “to make it exciting” is a bias. Doing it in secret is a trick. If a teacher wants a quieter student to get a slightly larger chance, that is a coaching choice and should be said as a coaching choice, not as luck. A wheel of names random picker that is secretly weighted is not a picker. It is a script with a wheel skin.

If two rooms must share one order, copy each result as it lands, or use a mode that can replay a seed. An unlogged refresh is not a raffle record. A screenshot from a different wheel app is not this spin. Animation length is theatre: a long spin does not add entropy. A short spin does not subtract it if the underlying choice already came from the list.

The wheel cannot volunteer a person you never typed. It can only rotate the people you did.

When the wheel is the wrong object

Do not use a name wheel to pick a password, a cryptographic number, or a medical slot. Those jobs need other generators and other rules. Do not use a hidden phone as a public lottery. Fairness other people can check is the fairness you showed: the list, the replacement rule, the result. A pocket spin is a private choice.

Ties in the social sense happen when replacement is on and the same person wins twice. That is the setting working. Spin from the remaining names if the rule was unique, and write that rule so the second spin is not an ad-lib. Ties in the visual sense — a pointer that looks like it sits on a line — are a reason to use a tool that names the winner in text, not only in paint. Trust the named result, then, if the room still doubts, spin again from the same honest list rather than arguing about pixels.

The picker returns a name, not a biography. It does not check attendance, consent, or eligibility beyond what you typed. You still have to look up from the screen and see whether that person is in the room and willing. The wheel’s job ended when it said the name.
