Time south australia adelaide

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, keeps Australian Central Time: UTC+9:30 in winter (ACST) and UTC+10:30 in summer (ACDT). The city’s public holidays follow the South Australian table.

Time By Online Alarm Clock

How it works

Time in Adelaide is not the same as time in Sydney, Perth, or Darwin, even when the word “Australia” is in the query. South Australia’s standard offset is nine and a half hours ahead of UTC. In the warmer months the state springs forward one hour to UTC+10:30. The IANA name is Australia/Adelaide. Clocks change at 2:00 toward 3:00 on the first Sunday in October, and back at 3:00 toward 2:00 on the first Sunday in April. In 2026 the autumn back-shift was Sunday 5 April; the spring forward is Sunday 4 October.

Darwin, in the Northern Territory, uses the same standard offset, ACST, but does not keep daylight saving. In the southern winter Adelaide and Darwin match. In the southern summer Adelaide is an hour ahead of Darwin. Broken Hill, in far western New South Wales, follows South Australian clocks rather than Sydney. Those two exceptions are how people get a meeting wrong while still “being in Australia.”

Adelaide stays thirty minutes behind Sydney and Melbourne all year, because New South Wales and Victoria change clocks on the same October and April weekends. Brisbane does not use daylight saving, so the Adelaide–Brisbane gap flips: Adelaide is thirty minutes behind in winter and thirty minutes ahead in summer. Perth on UTC+8 is one and a half hours behind Adelaide in winter and two and a half hours behind in summer.

Holidays on that clock, not on Sydney’s

South Australia’s public holidays are in the Public Holidays Act 2023. They are the dates that close an Adelaide counter. They are not New South Wales dates with a different sunrise. Adelaide Cup Day is the second Monday in March (9 March in 2026). The Sovereign’s Birthday holiday is the second Monday in June (8 June in 2026), not the October Monday some other states use. Labour Day is the first Monday in October (5 October in 2026), which in 2026 is the day after the clocks go forward. Proclamation Day holiday is 26 December, standing in for what other states call Boxing Day; the historical proclamation of the province is 28 December 1836, and the Act still treats 26 December as the holiday name. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are part-day public holidays from 7 p.m. to midnight.

ANZAC Day stays on 25 April. When that date is a Saturday, South Australia does not add a Monday. In 2026, 25 April is Saturday; there is no extra weekday. When 26 December is a Saturday, as in 2026, the Saturday is a holiday and the following Monday is an additional day. Read the South Australian notice, not a national infographic drawn in Sydney.

Standard: ACST, UTC+9:30. Daylight: ACDT, UTC+10:30. 2026 changes: back 5 April; forward 4 October at the local 2:00/3:00 rules. Adelaide Cup: second Monday in March. Labour Day (SA): first Monday in October.

Proclamation Day holiday: 26 December, plus extra weekdays when the Act says so. Darwin: same winter time, no summer shift.

Using Adelaide time without fighting the half hour

Write 9:30, not “about an hour.” Meeting tools that only offer whole-hour zones will lie. For a holiday weekend, convert the local public-holiday midnight, not the Sydney one. A live stream billed as “Monday 5 October, Labour Day” is a Monday in Adelaide after a 2:00 a.m. spring-forward; the lost hour is in the small hours, not in the afternoon picnic, but overnight shifts and international calls still feel it.

Pick Australia/Adelaide, not Australia/Sydney and not a generic “ACST” if the date is in summer. Check whether the date is inside the October–April daylight span. If the other city is Darwin, Brisbane, or Perth, recompute the gap; it is not always thirty minutes.

If you needed a day off in Adelaide, use the South Australian holiday list, not the eastern one. Adelaide is half an hour off the eastern seaboard every day of the year. That offset is the clock. A public holiday is a separate switch.

Time in Adelaide, Australia, is this central half-hour clock, whether you typed “time south australia adelaide” or “time adelaide australia.” The city does not keep a private zone inside the state. Port Augusta and Mount Gambier use the same rules. The holiday table is statewide too, with the Cup Day name reminding you that the March Monday is a South Australian invention, not a federal one.
