Perth uses the IANA zone Australia/Perth. The offset is eight hours ahead of UTC in January and in July. Western Australia does not currently observe daylight saving. Eastern states do, in the warmer months, so the gap between Perth and Sydney is not a fixed two hours all year. When New South Wales is on Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10), Perth is two hours behind. When New South Wales is on Australian Eastern Daylight Time (UTC+11), Perth is three hours behind. The Perth clock itself does not jump.

A public holiday in Western Australia begins and ends on Perth’s local date. Australia Day on 26 January is 26 January in Perth while it may still be 25 January in North America. Christmas Day is 25 December on the AWST calendar. If you are calling a closed counter from another continent, the holiday is already in progress, or already over, on Perth time, not on yours.

From Thursday, 3 September 2026, the next Western Australia public holiday on the state list is King’s Birthday on Monday, 28 September 2026. That is a Perth Monday. It is still Sunday in much of the Americas when Perth’s public holiday morning starts.

Statewide public holidays in Western Australia for 2026 include New Year’s Day (1 January), Australia Day (26 January), Labor Day (2 March), Good Friday (3 April), Easter Monday (6 April), ANZAC Day (25 April, with Monday 27 April observed), Western Australia Day (1 June), King’s Birthday (28 September), Christmas Day (25 December), and Boxing Day (26 December, with Monday 28 December observed). Easter Sunday is also listed. 2027 repeats the named days on that year’s weekdays, including Western Australia Day on 7 June and King’s Birthday on 27 September.

Do not use a Sydney DST table to open a Perth office. Western Australia Day is the first Monday in June, a winter Monday in the southern hemisphere. Labor Day in this state is the first Monday in March, early autumn. Those are not the same Mondays as other Australian states. A “public holiday in Australia today” answer that names only the eastern seaboard will misread Perth.

Perth will not steal an hour in October to make your conference call easier. Shift the meeting, not the city.

Using the time to catch the holiday, not miss it

If you are flying in for a long weekend, convert the holiday to Perth local midnight-to-midnight first, then book. If you are phoning a business, convert your hour to AWST and then check whether that Perth date is a listed close. A Friday night call from London can land on a Saturday morning in Perth with no holiday involved; a Sunday night call can land on a Monday King’s Birthday morning with the counter shut.

Eucla and the south-east border use a different offset (UTC+8:45) and are not Perth. If the address is Perth, use Australia/Perth. If the address is not Perth, do not borrow Perth’s clock because it is “Western Australia” in a headline.
