State fair hours

How it works

Fair hours are not a national clock. Each agricultural fair prints admission, grounds, buildings, and rides as separate lines. “Fair hours” in a search box is a request for that year’s page, not for a remembered pair from another state. Two fairs people look up by name are the Minnesota State Fair and the OC Fair in Costa Mesa. They do not share a wake-up time.

The 2026 Minnesota State Fair runs twelve days ending Labor Day: August 27 through September 7. Fairgrounds hours are 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with admission until 9:00 p.m. On Labor Day the grounds close at 8:00 p.m. and admission ends at 6:00 p.m. Many exhibit buildings open at 9:00 a.m. Kidway is listed 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; Mighty Midway 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with a note that ride closing times can move. Ticket sales, hand stamps, and guest desks have their own shorter spans.

The 2026 OC Fair ran July 17 through August 16. It was open Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to midnight. Monday and Tuesday were closed. Advance tickets were required. Next year’s dates and hours will be posted by that fair, not copied from Minnesota.

Sleep is the split those two boards make obvious. A 7:00 a.m. Minnesota gate asks for an early alarm and a night that ended on time. An 11:00 a.m. Orange County gate lets you sleep in and then stay out toward midnight. Using both edges of either fair in one day is how a night disappears.

If you are going to the Minnesota grounds, treat 7:00 a.m. as a real open: the walkways can take you while many buildings are still dark until 9:00. That suits a person who slept well and wants cooler air. It does not suit a person who went to bed after a concert the night before. Arrive at 7:10 a.m. only if that night already happened. The first-time visitor note from the fair itself is to come early; it is not an order to skip sleep.

If you are looking at OC Fair hours, the day starts after a full morning. An 11:00 a.m. turnstile is a sleep-in that the fair, not you, chose. Friday and Saturday toward midnight are a different problem: children’s bedtimes, work-night buffers, and the drive home after a late ride. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays are not “short days.” They are dark days. Do not plan a Monday picnic on last year’s memory of a seven-day fair.

OC Fair, 2026 board: 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. or midnight; closed Monday and Tuesday. Sleep: match the trip to the night you still owe yourself, not to both edges of the printed span. A 7:00 a.m. gate and a midnight midway are not the same clock. Pick the edge you can still sleep through.

Last admission is not last light

Admission ending before the grounds is the line people miss. In Minnesota, the ordinary day stops taking people at 9:00 p.m. while the grounds stay open until 11:00 p.m. You cannot treat 10:30 p.m. as a time to arrive. Labor Day moves both numbers earlier. Online and gate ticket windows close before admission does. If the errand is a ticket, read that window, not the ride hours.

Rides often run later than barns and exhibit halls. A family that came for animals at 9:00 a.m. and stayed for the midway is choosing a long day. Split it if a child still has a bedtime. The fair will be there tomorrow on a twelve-day run, except on the last day, when the short close is the whole remaining chance. Other state fairs print other boards. Never import Minnesota’s 7:00 a.m. onto a fair that opens at noon, or Orange County’s closed Monday onto a fair that runs all week.
