How it works

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art sits at 151 Third Street. The visit page is the schedule. Standard hours put most days on a 10 a.m.–5 p.m. clock, close the galleries on Wednesday, and shift Thursday to a noon open with an 8 p.m. close. That Thursday evening is the after-work visit: a person who leaves an office in the city can still walk in. A person who only has Wednesday off will find the museum closed.

The Museum Store on Floor 1 keeps a slightly different board: it opens at 11 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, matches Thursday noon–8 p.m., and is closed Wednesday with the rest of the building. A lunch spent only in the store is not a gallery visit. Tickets, member entry, and free public space on the lower floors follow the rules on the visit page, not a guess from another museum that stays open late on Fridays.

Dated closures interrupt the standard week. The visit page has listed gallery and cafe closures on specific dates while the store remains reachable from Third Street. Always read the current notice before you spend a workday lunch on the trip. A 5 p.m. close is a hard edge for anyone still in a meeting at 4:15. Last entry is not the same as last lock; if you need a full hour in a gallery, you needed to be inside well before 5.

Thursday after work, and the lunch that fits

Thursday is the day that belongs to people with jobs. Galleries open at noon, which is late for a morning errand and useful for a lunch that starts after 12. They stay until 8 p.m., which is the only standard evening. If you can take only one weeknight, take Thursday. Monday and Tuesday are daytime hours: they suit a day off, a remote morning, or a visitor who is not trying to sandwich art between two meetings.

Weekday daytime: Monday and Tuesday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Closed: Wednesday, unless a special event on the calendar says otherwise. After work: Thursday noon–8 p.m. Weekend: Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Store: later morning open than the galleries on most days; same Thursday evening. A lunch visit has to include walk or transit from wherever you work. Third Street at noon on a weekday is a different crowd from Thursday at 6 p.m. Buy or reserve according to the visit page so you are not spending the only free hour in a ticket line. Members still obey the same open and close. Free admission for some ages and discounted tickets for others do not extend the clock. They only change what you pay inside the hours that already exist.

Wednesday will not open because you finally got the afternoon off. The late night is Thursday. Put the job’s free evening on the same day the museum did.
