How it works

The wheel is a picker with a picture. Behind the picture is a list. The tool chooses an entry, then the animation lands on that entry. If two names occupy equal slices, they are equal draws. If one name is pasted twice, that person has two slices. The spinning sound does not change the odds. The list does.

Load the names first. A wheel with nobody on it cannot pick a person. A wheel with yesterday’s class list will pick yesterday’s class. Remove people who left. Add people who arrived. A raffle that still contains last year’s winner as a duplicate is not a mystery. It is an unedited file.

Decide replacement before the first spin. With replacement, a name goes back on the wheel and can win again at once. That is fine for a writing prompt or a chore for the next five minutes. Without replacement, the name comes off until the list is empty. That is the honest habit for a prize, a speaking order, or a team draft. Mixing the two habits mid-round is how a room starts arguing about luck.

The result is a name, not a biography. The wheel does not check that the person is present, eligible, or willing. You still have to look up from the screen.

Build the list on purpose

Write the pool out loud if more than one person has to trust the draw. A classroom, a meetup, and a family reunion are three different hats. Agree what belongs in the hat before anyone leans on the button.

Put in every person who should be eligible, once. Leave out everyone who should not be eligible, including the host if the host is not in the draw. Spell names the way the people spell them, so the winner can be identified.

Say whether repeats are allowed, then spin. Weighted slices are a different instrument. If you enlarge one slice to “make it exciting,” you have a biased wheel. Say so, or do not do it. A secret extra slice for a friend is a trick, not a random name wheel.

If two rooms must share one sequence, copy each result as it appears, or use a seeded shuffle both can replay. An unlogged refresh is not a raffle record. Screenshots of a different app are not this draw.

The wheel only knows the names you fed it. It cannot invent a volunteer who was never on the list.

When a wheel is the wrong tool

Do not use a name wheel to pick a password, an email, or a number. Those are other lists. Do not use it as a public lottery if you cannot show the list, the method, and the result together. A private phone in a pocket is a private pick. Fairness other people can check is the fairness you showed.

Ties happen when you spin twice with replacement and get the same person. That is not a software failure. It is replacement doing what you asked. Spin again from the remaining names if the rule was unique winners, and write that rule down so the second spin is not a dodge.

Animation length is theatre. A longer spin does not make a fairer draw. A shorter spin does not cheat if the underlying choice was already made from the list. Watch the list, not the blur.
