Random name picker
A random name picker draws one name from a list by chance. You load the names, start the pick, and accept the result. A wheel is that draw with a spin the room can watch.
How it works
Every name now on the list should have an equal chance unless you weighted the list on purpose. Show the list. Hide it, and the pick looks like a private decision with animation. Say the replacement rule before the first result. With replacement, a name can win twice. Without replacement, you take a winner out before the next pick. A class almost always wants without replacement. A raffle with extra tickets is a weighted draw; say so.
Equal chance dies in small ways. Two rows for one person double that person's weight. A missing row shuts someone out. A name added after the first result is a late thumb on the scale. Freeze the list, pick, then talk. Do not repair the roster in the middle of a spin you already started.
Write every eligible name once, in the spelling you will say out loud. State whether winners stay in or drop out. Pick with a method nobody can nudge after it starts. Read the name and stop. A second pick is a new draw, not a correction.
After you have a name you may still need to see if that person is in the room. That look is a check, not a second pick. Do not reroll because the first name is in the hallway. Wait, or mark an absence and pick from who remains, under the rule you already spoke.
Random name picker wheel
A random name picker wheel is a picker drawn as slices. The wheel does not add fairness. It adds a pause. That pause helps when trust is thin: a silent click can look like the adult chose. A visible spin looks like the tool chose, if the slices are equal and the wheel cannot be flicked until a favourite lands.
Unequal slices are a weighted draw. Extra chores, extra tickets, extra turns are allowed when you said so. They are not allowed as a quiet accident of layout. Two names on one slice share one chance. One huge name is not in a lottery. Stop on the first rest. Spinning again because the pointer “almost” missed a friend turns the wheel into theatre. Several names means several stops under the replacement rule, not one wheel restarted until it behaves.
Flippity.net random name picker
Flippity.net turns a Google Sheet — or a quick typed list — into classroom activities. A flippity net random name picker, or flippity.net random name picker, is that chooser: names live in the sheet or in the box, and the Flippity page draws from them. Teachers use it because the roster is already a grid they can edit. Flippity is not a Google Sheets add-on you install from a store. You copy a template from Flippity.net, or you paste names into the quick form, then open the generated page.
On Flippity's own instructions, the spinner wheel is a fresh random draw each time, so the same student can be picked again. If you need each person once, use the Single Name or Lineup views instead of relying on the wheel to remember. The sheet is the list: a missing student cannot be picked; a duplicated student is heavier. Do not put family names you would not want in a shared link. The domain is a host. Chance still comes from the draw, not from the word Flippity.
A wheel you may spin until it “behaves” is a pointer, not a picker. Use Flippity when the class already lives in a spreadsheet and you want one list. Use any other picker when you do not want that chain of accounts. The fairness test does not change with the logo: complete list, equal weight, one accepted result.
Questions and answers
- Is a random name picker wheel fairer than a list click?
- Not by itself. Fairness is equal chance on a complete list. The wheel only makes the draw visible.
- What is the Flippity.net random name picker?
- A classroom picker on Flippity.net, fed by a typed list or a Google Sheet. The names you load are the names in the draw.
- Can the same name come up twice?
- Yes, if it stays in the list. Remove a winner, or use a once-through view, when each person should appear once.
