Random fact of the day

A random fact of the day is one short snippet tied to today’s date: one claim for this calendar square. Random facts of the day are the same idea as a list, still meant to be read one date at a time.

Time By Online Alarm Clock

How it works

Two machines get sold under this name. The first is a calendar: 366 slots (including a leap-day slot), each holding a fact that returns when that month and day return. The second is a shuffle: a pool of facts, one drawn for this visit, maybe never tied to the date again. Both can be honest. They are not the same product. A page that changes at midnight local time is a calendar. A page that changes on refresh is a shuffle. Look which one you opened.

The calendar kind is useful when you want a ritual: open the same page each morning, see a new square, maybe see the same square next year. The shuffle kind is useful when you want variety on demand. Mixing them without a label is how two people argue about “today’s” fact and are both looking at a real screen.

Local midnight decides “the day” for a dated feed. A fact that flipped at midnight in one time zone is still yesterday in another. If the page uses the reader’s clock, your date wins. If it uses the publisher’s clock, theirs wins. Neither is a trick. It is a timezone choice. When you quote the fact, quote the date and the zone if the argument would survive a flight.

One fact, not a pile

Random facts of the day, plural, often means a list page: many snippets, still grouped as daily items. A list is a library. A fact of the day is a selection. Use the list when you are browsing. Use the daily slot when you want a limiter. Unlimited trivia is a rabbit hole with a clock painted on it.

A good daily slot is short enough to finish before the kettle boils, and specific enough to be checked. “Water boils” is not a fact worth dating. “This page’s fact for 3 September is …” is a dated claim. If you cannot say what would make it false, it is a vibe. Save vibes for another heading.

See whether the fact is bound to the calendar date or to a refresh. Read the whole sentence, including units and names. Keep it only if you could explain how you would check it. Do not paste it as news without the date it was labelled for.

Repeating a calendar fact next year is expected. Repeating a shuffle fact the next morning is luck. Do not accuse a dated feed of “running out of ideas” because 4 July came around again. That is the design. A fact of the day you cannot attach to a date is just a sentence you liked.

Keeping the snippet honest

Daily facts fail in two boring ways. They invent a number, or they omit the condition that made the number true. A length without a year, a record without a place, a “first” without a field, are not ready for a calendar square. Skip those. A true narrow sentence beats a grand false one.

Your own log can be a fact of the day that needs no publisher: one dated line you actually observed. The time the bus came. The last day of term. The leap status of this year. Those are calendar facts you can support. They travel better than an unsourced superlative from a widget.

If you collect random facts of the day, store them with the date they were shown, not only the text. Without the date, you cannot tell a calendar series from a shuffle, and you cannot tell this year from last year when the same sentence returns.

Questions and answers

What is a random fact of the day?
One short claim labelled for today’s date, or one draw from a pool shown as today’s item. Check which kind you have.
Are random facts of the day different?
The plural usually means a list of such items. The daily practice is still one square at a time.
Why did two sites disagree on today’s fact?
Different pools, different midnight, or one shuffle versus one calendar. They are not required to match.
