Random city picker

How it works

The picker does not wander the planet. It holds a finite list of city names, chooses one entry, and shows that entry. If the list has three names, only those three can appear. If the list is empty, there is nothing to pick. That is not a software mystery. That is an empty box.

A click is one draw. The next click is another draw from the same list, unless you removed the first city. Independent draws can repeat. A classroom that needs a different city per student wants a shuffle: deal the list, do not roll it. A private prompt that only needs a surprise can put names back. Say which session you are in before anyone calls the result unfair.

The list is the whole instrument. A pile of capital cities is a geography drill. A pile of towns you might actually visit is a trip helper. A pile of fictional places is a writing prompt. Label the pile. A picker that silently mixes those three jobs will hand you a quiz answer you cannot fly to, or a destination that does not exist on a map.

Load a list you would accept

Fairness starts before the button. If you would refuse a city when it appears, it should not be on the list. Take it off. Do not load a long list and then veto most of it after the draw. That turns a picker into a menu you still have to browse, with extra resentment.

Filters belong on the list, not on the result. Country, language, size band, or “places we can reach by train” are list-building rules. Apply them, then pick. Applying them after you dislike the draw is shopping. The tool cannot see your budget. It can only see the names you left in.

Write or import the cities you are willing to live with. Remove duplicates and names you will veto on sight. Choose replacement: names go back, or names leave after a draw. Draw once for the decision in front of you.

Save the name with the list version if anyone else must honor it. Show the remaining names if the draw is public. A hidden list is a weaker ritual. People trust a pile they can see thinning. They do not trust a phone face-down after you already scrolled. The picker is allowed to be boring. Boring and visible beats theatrical and private when a group has to accept the city.

One city is a decision, not a tour

A picker returns one place. It does not build a route, a budget, or a week of weather. If you needed several cities, you needed several draws with a no-repeat rule, or a different tool that emits a set. Do not treat the first name as a full itinerary. Pin it, then plan with maps and calendars that are not this button.

For a writing scene, the picked city is a constraint: streets, food, and climate have to match that name if you claimed it is real. If you cannot support those details, either research them or pick from a fictional list. For a quiz, the picked city is an answer key. Hide the screen from the guesser. For a team outing, the picked city is a destination only if everyone already agreed the list was the candidate set.

If the city was not on the list, the picker did not fail. You never gave it that city to hold. Repeats mean a short list or names put back. If the same town keeps arriving, look at the pile. Adding more names is a list edit. Accusing chance is not. When the decision is made, stop clicking. Extra picks are a stall. The first accepted city is the one the tool was for.
