How it works

The ordinary noun is 夜. 夜晚 (yèwǎn) is a slightly fuller “night.” 夜里 (yèli) is “at night,” the time in which something happens. 晚上 is the evening stretch, from after work toward bed. 晚安 (wǎn’ān) is “good night,” a farewell, not a festival. None of these words is a public holiday. Offices do not close for 夜. If you landed here from a language search, those are the words. If you landed here because a holiday page ranked for “night,” the useful second answer is which festival night people usually mean.

Chinese festival life is heavy on named nights. The year turns on an eve. The first full moon of the new year is a night of lanterns. Mid-Autumn is a night of the moon. English “night in Chinese” collapses those into one string. They are not one string. They are different lunar rules with different food.

Festival nights that steal the search

除夕 (chúxī) is Chinese New Year’s Eve, the last evening of the old lunar year. The meal that night is 年夜饭, the reunion dinner. In 2026 that eve was 16 February. The next is 5 February 2027. Day one of the year is the next morning: 17 February 2026, 6 February 2027. The night and the morning are a pair. Calling the morning “night” does not make it the eve.

元宵 is the lantern night, the fifteenth of the first lunar month, 3 March in 2026 and 20 February in 2027. Mid-Autumn, the Chinese moon festival, is the fifteenth of the eighth month: 25 September 2026, 15 September 2027. From 3 September 2026 that moon night is the next of these three to arrive. Each night has a rule. None of them is titled Night in the gazette.

夜 / 夜晚 — night. 晚上 — evening. 晚安 — good night (a greeting, not a date). 除夕 — lunar New Year’s Eve (16 February 2026; 5 February 2027). 元宵 — lantern night. 中秋 — Mid-Autumn night (25 September 2026). 夜 names the dark. 除夕 names the dark that turns the year. Hang those on two nails, not one.

Evening words that will not close a bank

If you are learning the language, 今天晚上 is this evening, 昨天夜里 is last night, 半夜 is midnight. Those are clock words. They do not become Spring Festival because you said them in February. If you are dating a greeting, send it on the recipient’s date, in their night, not in yours. A “happy eve” text at your sunset can arrive at their breakfast.

U.S. federal offices do not close for a Chinese night. Mainland China’s public holiday is attached to festival dates, not to the word 夜. If you wanted a translation, use 夜. If you wanted the eve, use 除夕 and the lunar date. If you wanted the mooncake night, that is Mid-Autumn, twenty-two days from 3 September 2026, and it is still not a holiday called Night. A black square on a planner labelled “night” is a bedtime. It is not Zhongqiu, and it is not the reunion dinner, until you write the actual name beside it.
