One thousand seconds is 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Divide 1,000 by 60: 16 full minutes, remainder 40 seconds. It is not 1,000 milliseconds, and it is not one second. The digit string 1000 does not choose the unit. The word after it does.

People land on this heading because a timer, a render log, or a homework sheet printed 1000 s and they want it in minutes. Keep the remainder. Calling 1,000 seconds “about 17 minutes” throws away 20 seconds; calling it “16 minutes” throws away 40. If you need a decimal, 1,000 ÷ 60 is 16 and two-thirds minutes, which is 16.666… minutes. Mixed units (16 min 40 s) are usually clearer than the repeating decimal.

In hours, 1,000 seconds is 1,000 ÷ 3,600 of an hour. That is not a whole hour. Do not round it to “fifteen minutes” or “half an hour.” Those are different lengths. Fifteen minutes is 900 seconds. Half an hour is 1,800 seconds.

How long is 1000 seconds on a clock face: start at a labeled time, add 16 minutes, then add 40 seconds. From 3:00:00 you reach 3:16:40. The date does not change unless you started so close to midnight that 16 minutes 40 seconds crosses it.

1000 millis to seconds

One thousand millis to seconds is a different 1,000. Millis here means milliseconds. 1,000 milliseconds ÷ 1,000 = 1 second exactly. That is the SI prefix at work: milli- is a thousandth, so a thousand of them rebuild the original unit.

Formats for that fact: 1,000 ms = 1 s 1000 millis = 1 second, if millis is your log’s word for milliseconds 1,000 msec = 1 sec 1e3 ms = 1e0 s 00:00:01.000 on a stopwatch that shows hours:minutes:seconds.milliseconds

A file that stores 1000 without a unit is not yet converted. If the column is milliseconds, the second value is 1. If the column is seconds, the second value is 1,000, which is the 16 minutes 40 seconds above. Read the header. The two readings of “1000” differ by a factor of 1,000, which is the whole point of this page.

Millis as a nickname is informal. In print, prefer ms or milliseconds. In a spreadsheet, keep one unit per column. Do not put 1000 millis in one cell and 2 seconds in the next and then sum the column. Convert, then sum.

1000 millis is one second. 1000 seconds is a coffee break. The comma does not tell you which; the unit does.

Slang, SI, and the factor you keep

Millis to seconds is always divide by 1,000. Seconds to millis is always multiply by 1,000. 250 millis = 0.25 seconds. 2 seconds = 2,000 millis. 1 millis = 0.001 seconds. There is no special case for round numbers. 1,000 looks round in both units, which is why it is the number people mix up.

Game engines, audio buffers, and network timeouts often speak millis because whole milliseconds are easier to type than 0.001. That is a format habit. The physics is still the SI second. When you report a duration to a person, seconds and minutes are usually kinder than a five-digit millisecond count. When you report a duration to a machine, pick the unit the API documents and do not translate it “to be helpful.”

If a display already shows seconds with three decimal places, those three digits are milliseconds in decimal clothing: 1.000 s is 1,000 ms. If a display shows an integer ms counter, dividing by 1,000 produces the second value. Read which skin the number is wearing before you convert it a second time.
