How it works

The prefix “micro” represents one millionth of the base unit. A microsecond is written as µs, while a second is commonly written as s. Because the units differ by a factor of one million, conversion requires only multiplication or division.

Use this formula: seconds = microseconds ÷ 1,000,000. For example, 500,000 microseconds becomes 0.5 seconds. A value of 2,000,000 microseconds becomes 2 seconds. Keep the original value until the final calculation when precision matters. Early rounding can remove small differences that are meaningful in timing logs, benchmarks, electronics, or software traces. Microseconds are tiny, but enough of them will still make everyone wait.

Seconds to microseconds

For seconds to microseconds, reverse the operation: microseconds = seconds × 1,000,000. Thus 0.25 seconds equals 250,000 microseconds, and 3 seconds equals 3,000,000 microseconds. Microseconds to seconds: divide by 1,000,000.

Seconds to microseconds: multiply by 1,000,000. Label the input unit before converting. Retain enough decimal places for the intended use. Check whether a tool expects an integer or decimal value. When a software interface accepts only whole microseconds, a fractional-second duration can often be represented exactly if it has no precision beyond six decimal places. If greater precision is supplied, the system may round, truncate, reject, or interpret it differently according to its documented behavior.

Beware of similar abbreviations. Milliseconds and microseconds are different units, and confusing them changes the magnitude substantially. The Greek letter µ is the standard micro symbol, though software and plain-text systems sometimes use “us” when the character is unavailable.
