How many minutes in a soccer game

A standard outdoor soccer match is 90 minutes of playing time in two 45-minute halves, plus stoppage time the referee adds. It is not a 12-minute game.

The Laws of the Game set two equal periods of 45 minutes for a full adult match. Half-time sits between them. The referee may add time at the end of each half for substitutions, injuries, and other stoppages. That added time is measured in minutes on the referee’s watch. It is not a hidden extra half, and it is not a fixed number you can copy from last week’s match.

The 90 minutes are playing periods, not “the whole afternoon.” Warm-up, half-time, and the walk off the pitch are extra on the civil clock. A 3 p.m. kickoff with a 15-minute half-time and several minutes of stoppage will finish well after 4:30 p.m. even though the named length is still 90 minutes of play.

Knockout ties that are still level after 90 minutes plus stoppage may go to extra time: two further periods of 15 minutes each, again with stoppage as the referee decides. Penalty kicks, if used, are a different procedure. They are not another 45-minute half.

This page is about association football — soccer. American football quarters, basketball quarters, and hockey periods are other sports with other minute counts. Do not import them.

How the minutes are measured

The referee is the timekeeper on the field. The stadium clock is a display for the crowd. When the two disagree, the referee’s watch is the one that ends the half. Added time is shown in whole minutes as a minimum; play continues until the referee stops it.

Measurement details that change the civil end, not the named 90: Stoppage time after each 45-minute period Half-time, commonly up to 15 minutes in the Laws, often shorter in practice at some levels Extra time: two periods of 15 minutes when a competition requires a winner that day

Drinks breaks or cooling breaks where a competition allows them, which pause play A shortened match if the referee and competition rules permit a different period length Youth, school, college, indoor, and small-sided games often use other period lengths on purpose. High-school rules in the United States commonly use two 40-minute halves. Those are still soccer. They are not the FIFA adult 90. Always read the competition’s period length before you set an alarm for “full time.”

The scoreboard’s 90 is a named period, not a promise that your ride should arrive at minute 90 on the nose.

A 12 minutes game is a different ruler

A 12 minutes game is not the standard outdoor adult match. Some youth, rec, indoor, and training formats use 12-minute periods — quarters or halves, depending on the league sheet. Four periods of 12 minutes are 48 minutes of named play, plus any breaks between periods. Two halves of 12 minutes are 24 minutes of named play. Neither is 90.

If a flyer says “12 minute games,” treat that as the period length the organizer chose. Do not stretch it to 90 in your head because “soccer is 90 minutes.” The organizer’s sheet is the measurement. A round-robin on a small field often picks a short period so more teams can share the lights. A full-field adult league almost never does.

Indoor soccer and some small-sided sessions also use short running clocks or short stop clocks. A running clock keeps ticking during ordinary stoppages; a stop clock does not. That choice changes how long you stand on the sideline even when both formats print “12 minutes.” Ask which clock they are using. The number 12 alone does not say.

To plan a day: count the named minutes of play, then add the breaks the format actually uses, then add extra time only if that competition has it. Do not add World Cup stoppage to a U8 12-minute quarter. Different rulers.

A 13 hour cast writes thirteen hours as a label in front of the word cast. Most people who type it want the actors in the film 13 Hours. The number is a duration, not a clock time.
