Hours for trick or treating

How it works

Halloween is October 31. The candy walk is not a national store clock. A city, a suburb, or a homeowners’ group may publish suggested hours. Another city publishes nothing and leaves the night to custom. Where a window exists, it is often a late-afternoon start and an evening end, commonly in a band that includes 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., with plenty of towns starting earlier or ending at 7:00, 8:30, or 9:00. Some places move the walk to the nearest weekend if October 31 is a school night. The flyer, the police post, or the town site for that place is the schedule. A list from another metro is not.

Sleep is the reason the window is short. Small children already run on an early bedtime. A 5:00 p.m. start can land before dinner. An 8:00 p.m. end is already past many weeknight lights-out. The walk is supposed to finish in time for a bath, a check of the candy, and actual sleep. If you start at 7:40 in a town that ends at 8:00, you get twenty minutes and a late crash. If you start at 4:30 in a town that asked for 6:00, you get dark porches and a confused street.

Porch lights and decorations are the informal close where no ordinance exists. A dark porch is a closed counter. Do not knock it into a nap. Do not start a second loop after the suggested end because the bag still has room. The hours were the deal with the neighbors who also have to sleep.

Some towns write real rules: a start, a stop, sometimes an age cap, sometimes a curfew that is a misdemeanor if you ignore it. Others only suggest. Read which kind you live in. A suggestion is still useful. A curfew is not a vibe. If the notice says 6:00 to 8:00, that is the walk. If the notice says anyone out after 8:00 can be charged, that is not a metaphor.

School nights make the sleep math worse. October 31 is often a weekday. The costume does not move sunrise. Build dinner around the start, not after a long loop. If a town moved trick-or-treating to Sunday afternoon, that is a different sleep problem: a nap can still fit, and the school night stays intact. Follow that town’s date, not the calendar square you like more.

Check that town’s notice the week of October 31; do not reuse last year’s suburb. Treat a published end as the end, even if the bag is light. A dark porch is closed; do not wake a house that already chose sleep.

On a school night, start at the beginning of the window, not the last twenty minutes. The last house with a light is not a dare. It is a neighbor who has not gone to bed yet. After the posted hour, let them.

Candy, curfews, and the bedtime after

Adults who sit on the stoop have a sleep clock too. If you are handing out candy, the suggested end is when you can turn the light off without being rude. You are allowed to go dark at the end of the window. You are allowed to go dark earlier if a child in the house is already down. A bowl on the steps is a choice. An open door at 9:30 p.m. in a 8:00 p.m. town is how the next morning starts ugly for everyone.

After the walk, the night is not over until the sugar is managed and the lights are out. Sort candy once. Skip a second parade through the living room. The hours for trick-or-treating were the outdoor clock. The indoor clock is bedtime. If a child is too tired to walk at the posted start, skip the street and keep the sleep. There will be another October 31. There will not be another Tuesday morning if you spend this one in a pile of wrappers at 10:00 p.m.
