Hour to min converter

An hour to min converter multiplies hours by 60. One hour is 60 minutes; two hours are 120. A min to hours converter is the same pair run backward: divide minutes by 60.

Time By Online Alarm Clock

How it works

The converter is a format machine. You hand it a number of hours and it returns minutes, because the hour is defined as 60 minutes. Whole hours are easy: 3 hours → 180 minutes, 8 hours → 480 minutes, 24 hours → 1,440 minutes. Fractional hours use the same multiply. 1.5 hours is 90 minutes. 0.25 hours is 15 minutes. 2.75 hours is 165 minutes. If the fraction is written as hours and minutes already, do not multiply the minutes by 60 a second time. 2 h 15 min is 2 × 60 + 15 = 135 minutes, not 2.15 × 60.

Decimal hours and hours-and-minutes are two writings of one span. 2.5 h is 2 h 30 min, not 2 h 50 min. The digit after the point is tenths of an hour, and a tenth of an hour is 6 minutes. 0.1 h = 6 min, 0.2 h = 12 min, 0.5 h = 30 min. People who treat 2.3 h as 2 hours 3 minutes have mixed a decimal with a sexagesimal clock. A converter that is doing its job will not make that mix for you. If your input is 2:30 as a duration, that colon already means 2 hours 30 minutes = 150 minutes.

Negative hours are not a civil duration. A converter may refuse them or show a signed number for a spreadsheet. Either way, a length of time you work, sleep, or cook is a non-negative count. Zero hours is zero minutes. That is a real output, not an error, if the input was actually zero.

Hours to minutes: multiply by 60. Minutes to hours: divide by 60. Decimal 0.1 hour = 6 minutes. Colon duration 1:20 = 80 minutes, not 1.20 hours.

Min to hours converter, the other direction

A min to hours converter divides by 60. 60 minutes is 1 hour. 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, or 1 h 30 min. 45 minutes is 0.75 hours, or 45/60 hours. 1 minute is 1/60 hour. Remainders are allowed: 100 minutes is 1 hour and 40 minutes, which is 1 + 40/60 = 5/3 hours. You may keep mixed units (1 h 40 min) or one unit (100 min, or 1.666… h). What you may not do is write 1.40 hours for 1 h 40 min. 1.40 hours is 1 hour and 0.40 × 60 = 24 minutes.

Worked pairs that should survive a round trip: 3 h → 180 min → 3 h. 15 min → 0.25 h → 15 min. 8.5 h → 510 min → 8.5 h. If a round trip drifts, the tool is rounding too early or it has treated a colon as a decimal. Fix the format of the input before you trust a third decimal place.

If you multiply hours by 100, you have invented a clock that does not exist. The hour is sixty minutes, not a percentage.

What to type, and what not to mix

Type a plain number and a unit. “2” with the hours box selected is 120 minutes. “2:00” as a clock stamp is two o’clock, which is a time of day, not a duration of two hours, unless you clearly mean elapsed 2:00. A converter for hours and minutes is a duration tool. A clock converter is a different tool. If you needed “what time is two hours after 3:15,” add two hours to the stamp: 5:15. That addition uses the same 60-minute hour, but the answer is a clock reading, not “120 minutes” as the final form.

Questions and answers

How does an hour to min converter calculate?
It multiplies the hour count by 60. Fractional hours multiply the same way; a tenth of an hour is 6 minutes.
How does a min to hours converter work?
It divides minutes by 60. 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, which you may also write as 1 hour 30 minutes.
Is 2.30 hours the same as 2 hours 30 minutes?
No. 2.30 hours is 2 hours and 18 minutes. 2 hours 30 minutes is 2.5 hours.

100 seconds

100 seconds equals one minute forty seconds, or 100 s, or PT1M40S. It is a short duration. It is not 1:00, and it is not a hundred on a digital clock.

13 hour cast

A 13 hour cast writes thirteen hours as a label in front of the word cast. Most people who type it want the actors in the film 13 Hours. The number is a duration, not a clock time.
