Should the last day be included?
There is no universal answer; it depends on the rule governing the task. A deadline “within 10 days after receipt” may exclude the receipt date under the applicable policy or law. A vacation “from July 1 through July 7” usually includes both dates. A hotel booking from July 1 to July 7 normally means six nights, with checkout on the 7th.
Look for words such as “after,” “through,” “starting,” “nights,” and “business days.” For contracts, court deadlines, benefits, and financial interest, use the exact governing definition and holiday calendar. A general calculator can perform the math but cannot interpret a legal rule.
Counting working days
A basic working-day count includes Monday through Friday and excludes Saturday and Sunday. A business-day count often also excludes public holidays. Those two results can differ. Holiday calendars depend on country, region, organization, and sometimes industry.

- List every date in the range or calculate full weeks.
- Remove Saturdays and Sundays.

A fast manual method for weekdays
Separate the span into complete seven-day weeks and leftover days. Every complete week contains five weekdays. Multiply full weeks by five, then examine each remaining date for Saturday or Sunday. Finally remove applicable holidays.
Endpoint rules still matter. If the start is excluded, begin examining the following date. If both endpoints are included, include each when it is a permitted workday. Write the convention beside your result so another person can reproduce it.
Leap years
In the Gregorian calendar, a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years must also be divisible by 400. Thus 2024 and 2028 are leap years; 1900 and 2100 are not; 2000 is. A leap year has February 29 and 366 days.
If a range crosses February 29, that date contributes one additional day compared with the same span in a common year. Reliable date software applies the rule automatically. For manual work over multiple years, count the leap days explicitly rather than assuming one every four years.

Converting days to weeks
Divide the day difference by seven. A span of 45 days is six weeks and three days because 6 multiplied by 7 is 42. For a decimal answer it is approximately 6.43 weeks, but “6 weeks 3 days” is usually easier to interpret.
Calendar weeks are a different concept. A calendar-week count may ask how many labeled Monday-to-Sunday or Sunday-to-Saturday blocks a range touches. Two dates only two days apart can fall in different calendar weeks. Define whether you mean elapsed weeks or week numbers.
Why months cannot be a fixed conversion
Months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. Therefore “90 days” is not always exactly three calendar months, and “one month after January 31” needs a convention because February has no January 31 equivalent. Software may clamp to February’s last day or roll extra days into March.
For age, subscriptions, and anniversaries, calendar arithmetic is often appropriate: advance the month field and handle the end-of-month policy explicitly. For elapsed duration, count days. Do not divide by 30 unless an approximation is acceptable and clearly labeled.
Years, birthdays, and age
A person’s age in completed years increases on the birthday, not after a fixed number of 365-day blocks. Leap years make fixed-day division inaccurate. Compare the birth month and day with the current month and day after subtracting the years.
February 29 birthdays require a convention in non-leap years for some administrative purposes. Different laws and organizations may recognize February 28 or March 1. A calculator should not silently decide a legal result; select the rule that applies.
Dates versus timestamps
A date has no hour or time zone. Two midnights can be 23 or 25 elapsed hours apart where daylight saving time changes, even though the dates are consecutive. If the question is calendar days, compare dates. If it is exact elapsed time, compare timestamps representing real instants.

If the ending date precedes the starting date, a mathematical difference is negative. From May 10 to May 7 is minus three days. Some calculators instead show an absolute distance of three days. Both can be useful, but the sign conveys direction.
For “30 days before” a date, subtract 30 calendar boundaries and do not add an inclusive day unless the instruction says to count both endpoints. Verify the weekday after calculating. A backward countdown may be better described as elapsed time since an event.
