72 hour fast

How it works

Write a start time. Add 72 hours. The end is that later clock reading, three days on, at the same time of day if no daylight-saving fold sits in the window. A 72-hour fast is a duration. It is not a calendar phrase like “skip three breakfasts,” which can be shorter or longer than 72 hours depending on when you stop and start eating.

72 divided by 24 is 3, so people also say a three-day fast. Use elapsed hours when the end time matters. Use “three dates later” only if you truly mean dates. If you stop eating at 20:00 on Monday, 72 hours later is 20:00 on Thursday. If you instead eat again at breakfast on Thursday, you did not complete 72 hours.

This page converts lengths. It does not tell you to fast, and it does not promise a health result. A long stretch without food is a medical decision. If you are considering one, that conversation belongs with a clinician who knows your record. Water, medicines, work, and sleep still run on the same 72 hours; the clock does not pause for them.

Shorter fasts on the same clock

The other lengths people search are the same format with a smaller numerator. They are not automatically “easier versions of the same protocol.” They are shorter durations. A 16 hour fast is often a daily pattern: sixteen hours without eating, eight hours with food, repeated. A 72 hour fast is usually one block, not a daily 16:8 written three times.

16 hour fast — 16 hours; 16 ÷ 24 is two-thirds of a day. 24 hour fast — 24 hours, one full day from the start clock. 36 hour fast — 36 hours, one and a half days. 48 hour fast — 48 hours, two days. 72 hour fast — 72 hours, three days.

A 36 hour fast that starts after dinner on Sunday ends on Tuesday morning if the hours are counted honestly. Calling it “two days” is loose talk: two midnights can pass while the elapsed time is still 36 hours, or can fail to, depending on the start. Prefer the hour count on the label you chose.

Stacked daily 16 hour fasts do not add up to a 48 or 72 hour fast. Each 16 hour stretch is broken by an eating window. A 48 hour fast has no eating window in the middle. The names share “hour fast.” The shapes on the timeline do not.

How the hours are written

Write 72-hour with a hyphen when the words sit in front of “fast”: a 72-hour fast. Write the start as a date plus a time plus a zone if anyone else must check the end. Add 72 hours, or add three days and then check daylight saving.

For 24, 36, 48, or 16, use the same addition with that many hours. Do not convert a 16:8 daily pattern into 72 by multiplying; that pattern still contains meals. 72 hours is three midnights only if you started at midnight. Otherwise it is seventy-two hours, and the midnights are just scenery.

Formats on apps often show 72:00:00 as hours:minutes:seconds. That display is a timer, not a clock time of 72 o’clock. When the timer hits zero, 72 hours have elapsed. If you instead mark three calendar squares and eat at an earlier hour on the last square, you followed dates, not 72 hours. Pick one method and write it down before the first skipped meal, so the end is not a mood.
