5 hour course

How it works

How it works is a labelled length. Five hours is 5 × 60 minutes = 300 minutes, and 5 × 3,600 seconds = 18,000 seconds. Write 5 h, 300 min, 5:00:00 of elapsed time, or PT5H. Those formats are one budget of time for the course. They do not say whether the five hours sit in one afternoon or are split across weeks. They do not say 5:00 p.m.

The title “5 hour course” is a duration in the heading. A timetable then places that duration on the calendar. 09:00–14:00 is one way to seat five hours if there is no unpaid break inside. 09:00–15:00 with a one-hour lunch is five hours of instruction and six hours of elapsed civil time. Both can honestly be a 5 hour course. They are different clock-face shapes. Name which you mean: contact hours, or hours in the room including lunch.

5:00 as a wall time is five o’clock. 5:00 as h:mm elapsed is five hours. 5:00 as mm:ss is five minutes. The course uses the elapsed reading. If a listing prints “5:00 course” without a unit, ask whether that is five hours or a five o’clock start. That one question is the whole conversion.

Read 5 hour as 5 × 60 = 300 minutes of scheduled course time. Ask whether breaks sit inside those five hours or on top of them. Place the block on a date: one sitting, or several sittings that add to 300 minutes. Write PT5H or 5 h when a machine or a form wants a duration, not a clock stamp.

One block or five hours split

A single sitting of five hours is one block. Five sittings of one hour are still a 5 hour course if the advertised total is the sum. Two hours plus three hours is the same sum. The format of the schedule changed. The duration total did not, so long as nobody double-counted a break or dropped a session.

Add the sessions, do not average them. Three hours on Saturday and two hours on Sunday is five hours. Three hours on Saturday and three hours on Sunday is six. A “5 hour course” that meets “three hours each day for two days” is a six-hour course wearing the wrong title. Correct the title or correct the timetable. Do not split the difference.

Self-paced material that says “about five hours” is an estimate of student time, not a room booking. Finish early and you still completed the course. Finish late and the catalogue’s five hours were a guess. A live class that dismisses at the five-hour mark is a booking. Those two uses of “5 hour” should not share a calendar cell without a note.

Contact hours and elapsed hours

Contact hours are the hours the instructor and the student are scheduled to work the course together. Elapsed hours are what the wall clock shows between start and finish, including lunch, travel between rooms, and admin. A 5 hour course quoted in contact hours can occupy a longer civil afternoon. A course quoted as “arrive at nine, leave at two” may include a break that shrinks contact time below five. Read the listing’s own definition. This page will not invent a credit-hour rule for a school it cannot see.

Five hours in a course title is a budget of minutes. It is not a promise that the wall clock will read 5:00. To convert the other way: 300 minutes is 5 hours. 18,000 seconds is 5 hours. 0.208̅ days is 5 hours, because 5 ÷ 24 = 5/24. Nobody should put a course in days unless the rest of the form is in days. Keep the unit that the catalogue already used, then convert only when a timesheet or a visa form demands hours as a decimal: 5.0, not 5:00, in an hours column.
