A clock day written 24:00:00 is twenty-four hours, each hour 60 minutes, each minute 60 seconds. Multiply across: 24 × 60 = 1,440 minutes, and 1,440 × 60 = 86,400 seconds. The same product is 24 × 3,600, because one hour is 3,600 seconds. 24 hrs to seconds is that product. Hrs to seconds for any other hour count is hours × 3,600. The arithmetic does not care whether you wrote “24 hrs,” “24h,” or “1 day” on a form, as long as you meant 24 × 60 × 60 elapsed SI seconds.

Digital formats hide the product. 24:00:00 looks like a label at the end of a clock face. 86400 looks like a score. ISO 8601 durations can write PT24H or PT86400S for the same length. A spreadsheet that stores a time as a fraction of a 24-hour day treats 1 as 86,400 seconds. None of those spellings changes the multiplication. They are formats for the same span.

How many seconds on a day is the same 86,400 only when that civil day actually lasts 24 hours. Most calendar days do. Where a daylight-saving spring-forward skips an hour, a civil day can last 23 hours (82,800 seconds). Where an autumn fall-back repeats an hour, a civil day can last 25 hours (90,000 seconds). Leap seconds, when they are inserted, make a UTC day 86,401 seconds. Those exceptions are real. They are also named. If nobody named a clock jump or a leap second, use 86,400.

Hrs to seconds without changing units twice

To convert hours to seconds, multiply by 3,600 once. Do not convert hours to minutes, then forget and multiply by 60 again as if you still had hours. The failure mode is 24 × 60 = 1,440, then treating 1,440 as if it were already seconds. 1,440 is minutes in a day. Seconds are two 60s, not one.

1 hour = 3,600 seconds. 12 hours = 43,200 seconds. 24 hours = 86,400 seconds. 48 hours = 172,800 seconds. 23-hour civil day (spring clock jump) = 82,800 seconds. 25-hour civil day (autumn clock jump) = 90,000 seconds.

If your converter cannot show the two 60s, it is a magic box. Magic boxes are how 1,440 minutes get reported as 1,440 seconds and a day shrinks by a factor of sixty.

Writing 24 hours so another person can check it

Prefer a format that still contains the unit. “86400 s,” “24 h,” and “PT24H” can be checked. A bare 86400 on a slide will be read as a dollar amount or a population. If you need 24 hrs to seconds in a program, keep the integer 86400 as a named constant, not as a typed literal in six files. The number is easy to mistype as 8640 or 864000.

12-hour clock labels do not change the product. 12:00 a.m. to the next 12:00 a.m. is still 24 hours when no DST jump sits in between. AM/PM is a format for naming a moment, not a second counting system. 24-hour notation (00:00 to 24:00) is also a format. Both can describe the same elapsed day.
