2 hour delay
A 2 hour delay means the event is two hours later than planned: 120 minutes, often written 2h, +2:00, or a two-hour delay when the phrase is an adjective.
How it works
Start from the original time. Add two hours. That new clock reading is the delayed time, in the same time zone, unless the notice also changes the zone. A 2 hour delay is a duration, not a time of day. “Delay 14:00” would be a timestamp; “2 hour delay” is a slip of length 2:00 on the clock.
Two hour delay and two-hour delay are the same length. English puts the hyphen in when the words sit in front of a noun: a two-hour delay, a two-hour wait. Without a following noun, “two hour delay” is the wording many boards still print. Neither spelling changes the 120 minutes.
If the original time was 09:15, two hours later is 11:15. If it was 23:10, two hours later is 01:10 the next calendar date. The delay does not care that the date rolled. People miss that roll when they add 2 only to the hour field and forget the day on a 24-hour strip that wraps at midnight.
How to write a two-hour delay
Boards, tickets, and chats do not share one format. They share one duration. Pick a writing that cannot be read as a clock time if the reader is hurried. 2 hour delay, 2-hour delay, two hour delay, two-hour delay — all mean 120 minutes later.
2h or +2h — short marks on a status board. +2:00 or +02:00 — the same slip in clock style; this is not “two o’clock.” 120 minutes — useful when the rest of the page is already in minutes. +2:00 is a delta. 2:00 alone is a time of day. If a sign can be read both ways, write “2 hour delay” in words or write “+2h.” A passenger who treats +2:00 as “arrive at two” will wait at the wrong hour. The plus sign is doing real work.
In 12-hour writing, adding two hours can cross AM/PM. 11:00 AM plus two hours is 1:00 PM, not 13:00 AM. If you convert, finish the addition on a 24-hour line, then write AM or PM at the end. Mixing the two systems in the same addition is how 2:00 PM becomes “wait, is that 16:00?”
Minutes, clocks, and the new arrival
Write the original time with the date if it sits near midnight. Add 120 minutes, or add 2 to the hour and keep the minutes unchanged. If the hour passes 23, subtract 24 and advance the date by one. Keep the time zone unless the operator also published a zone change.
If a second delay is announced, add it to the already delayed time, not again to the original, unless the notice says it replaces the first slip. A two-hour delay is two hours. The hyphen is spelling, not a shortcut for the train.
Stacked delays are just more addition. A 2 hour delay plus another 30 minutes is 150 minutes after the original, if the second notice is extra. If the second notice is a new total delay of 30 minutes, the operator has shortened the slip; read the words “additional” versus “now delayed by.” The clock cannot settle that wording for you. The format only records the duration you were told.
