How it works

An hour contains 60 minutes. Dividing 150 by 60 gives two complete hours with 30 minutes remaining. The same duration can therefore be written as 150 min, 2 h 30 min, 2:30 when the context is duration, or 2.5 hours.

Be careful with the colon format. In a duration, 2:30 commonly means two hours and thirty minutes. In a clock display, it may mean a time of day. Add a label when the surrounding context does not make the meaning obvious.

Decimal hours and hours:minutes

Decimal hours express the fractional part as a portion of sixty minutes. Half an hour is 0.5 hours because thirty is half of sixty. This differs from writing 2.30 hours: the decimal part 0.30 represents three-tenths of an hour, not thirty minutes.

To convert a decimal fraction of an hour back to minutes, multiply the fraction by 60. To convert minutes to decimal hours, divide by 60. Keep enough precision for the task, and round only at the end if an approximate result is acceptable.

For timesheets and billing, follow the required format. Some systems accept decimal hours, while others expect hours and minutes in separate fields. Entering 2:30 into a decimal field may be rejected or interpreted incorrectly.

24 hours in mins

Twenty-four hours equals 1,440 minutes because 24 multiplied by 60 is 1,440. The phrases “24 hours in mins” and “24 hours in min” ask for the same conversion; only the abbreviation differs. Identify the starting unit.

Multiply hours by 60 to obtain minutes. Divide minutes by 60 to obtain decimal hours. Separate the whole hours and remainder for an hours-and-minutes display. Duration and clock time should remain distinct. A duration of 24 hours is a span of time. A clock reading labels a position within a day. Calendar calculations may also be affected by local clock changes, so “the same local time tomorrow” is a scheduling instruction rather than always a request for a fixed elapsed duration.
