Time in Vietnam — regions, cities and time zones
Vietnam uses Indochina Time, UTC+7, nationwide with no daylight saving. From the far north near the Chinese border to the tip of the Cà Mau peninsula, every clock in the country reads the same.

Current time in Hanoi
Hanoi in the Red River Delta is the capital and shares its offset with Ho Chi Minh City more than 1,100 kilometres to the south, with Da Nang on the central coast, and with everywhere in between. UTC+7 applies without exception.
Vietnam is a long, narrow country — over 1,600 kilometres north to south but in places barely 50 kilometres wide — and its shape works in favour of a single time zone. The east-west span that would justify multiple zones simply is not there.
North and south, same hour, different daylight
What the north and south do not share is the pattern of light. Hanoi, at around 21 degrees north, has a genuine seasonal swing: shorter days and cool, damp winters. Ho Chi Minh City, closer to 10 degrees north, has days of near-constant length and a year divided into wet and dry rather than warm and cold.
Northern regions: four recognisable seasons, noticeable variation in sunset time. Central coast: transitional, with a distinct rainy period later in the year. Southern regions and the Mekong Delta: consistent day length, wet and dry seasons.
Highland areas: cooler temperatures, same clock as the lowlands beside them. Travellers who plan an itinerary by clock alone are sometimes surprised at how much earlier evening arrives in Sapa than in the delta at certain times of year.
No daylight saving since reunification
Vietnam does not shift its clocks. Earlier in the twentieth century the territory saw various offsets and changes tied to colonial administration and to the division of the country, but the modern arrangement is a stable UTC+7 with no seasonal adjustment.
For anyone building schedules this is the good news: one offset, one rule, no exceptions, no calendar of change dates to maintain. A country shaped like a stretched letter S has enough geographic complications without adding an hour that moves twice a year.
Vietnam in the regional picture
UTC+7 puts Vietnam level with Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and western Indonesia including Jakarta. Neighbouring China runs an hour ahead at UTC+8 despite being immediately to the north, so crossing the land border between Vietnam and China moves the clock forward an hour.
Same hour: Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Jakarta. One hour ahead: Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila. Two hours ahead: Tokyo and Seoul. One and a half hours behind: Yangon, on Myanmar's UTC+6:30.
The working day and the overlap windows
Offices typically open in the morning and close in the evening, often with a real break in the middle of the day — a habit that suits the heat and is worth allowing for when you schedule a call into early afternoon Vietnamese time.
From Europe, Vietnam's afternoon is your morning, which gives a workable window of a few hours. From the US West Coast the overlap is genuinely awkward: Vietnamese business hours land in the middle of the American night, and the practical options are an early call for one side or asynchronous work for both. From Australia the alignment is comfortable, with only a few hours between Sydney and Hanoi.
Questions and answers
- Are Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on the same time?
- Yes. Both are UTC+7, along with the whole of Vietnam. The distance between them changes the flight time, not the clock.
- Does Vietnam change clocks for summer?
- No. There is no daylight saving; the offset is UTC+7 every day of the year.
- What time zone identifier does Vietnam use?
- Asia/Ho_Chi_Minh is the current standard identifier. Older data may carry Asia/Saigon, which is retained as an alias for the same zone.
