Cockburn Town sits on Grand Turk, a small island east of the main tourist cluster around Providenciales. Despite the distance between the islands, the whole territory reads one clock — there is no internal time difference between Grand Turk, Providenciales, North Caicos or Salt Cay.

The territory is a British Overseas Territory but does not follow British time. Its clock is North American, which matters for anyone assuming a UK link means a UK schedule. A call from London lands five hours earlier here in winter.

Time zone and offset

The islands use a single zone with two settings through the year: Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5, in the northern winter months. Eastern Daylight Time, UTC−4, in the northern summer months. The database identifier is America/Grand_Turk.

That identifier is worth remembering when configuring a server, a booking system or a calendar. Choosing "Eastern Time" from a list will usually behave identically, but naming the zone directly keeps the record honest about where the clock belongs.

Daylight saving

Clocks go forward an hour in spring and back an hour in autumn, on the same dates as the United States and Canada rather than Europe. For a few weeks each spring and autumn, the gap to the UK is one hour different from usual, because the two regions change on different weekends.

An island can be small enough to walk across and still be an hour out of step with the country that owns it. Geography sets the sun; politics sets the clock.

Regions and islands

The territory is made up of two groups of islands, all sharing one time: Turks Islands — Grand Turk, home to Cockburn Town, and Salt Cay. Caicos Islands — Providenciales, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, East Caicos and West Caicos.

Providenciales holds most of the population and the main airport, so in practice "island time" conversations are usually about Provo, even though the seat of government is elsewhere. Business hours across the islands follow a fairly ordinary morning-to-evening pattern, with the caveat that ferry and flight timetables between islands are the real constraint on a working day.

Working across the offset

A few practical notes for scheduling with the islands: Treat the territory as Eastern Time and you will almost always be right. Watch the shoulder weeks in March, October and November, when Europe and North America have not yet aligned their changes.

For automated systems, store America/Grand_Turk rather than a fixed offset, so daylight saving is handled for you. Remember that the whole territory changes together — there is no need to check which island your contact is on.

Cruise arrivals at Grand Turk and flight schedules into Providenciales both run on the local clock, so a printed itinerary in another time zone is a common source of confusion for visitors. Converting once, at the start of a trip, saves repeating the arithmetic at every port.
