Sint Maarten keeps Atlantic Standard Time, UTC−4, throughout the year. Philipsburg, the capital, never changes its clocks. When North America switches to daylight saving, Sint Maarten simply stays where it is.

Half an island, one time

Sint Maarten occupies the southern portion of a small Caribbean island; the northern part, Saint-Martin, is administered separately. The border is one of the least dramatic on earth — you can cross it without stopping — and, conveniently for everyone involved, both sides run on the same clock. A lunch appointment across the boundary needs no mental arithmetic, which is more than can be said for some land borders elsewhere in the world.

The IANA identifier is America/Lower_Princes, named for the district of Lower Prince's Quarter. It is one of the less-guessable zone names in the database, so it is worth copying rather than typing from memory.

What UTC−4 means day to day

Atlantic Standard Time places Sint Maarten one hour ahead of the US East Coast in winter and level with it in summer. That single fact explains most of the scheduling confusion visitors experience: November to March: Philipsburg is one hour ahead of New York and Miami.

March to November: Philipsburg matches New York and Miami exactly, because they have moved forward and Sint Maarten has not. Year-round: four hours behind UTC, so five hours behind London in winter and four in British summer time.

Same clock as Anguilla, Antigua, Dominica, Guadeloupe and much of the eastern Caribbean. The clock in Philipsburg does not move; it just watches everyone else move past it twice a year and waits for them to come back.

Daylight saving: not needed here

Sint Maarten does not observe daylight saving time. At this latitude the length of the day varies only modestly through the year, so the argument for shifting the clock forward in spring — recovering an hour of usable evening — barely applies. Sunrise and sunset drift by a manageable amount rather than swinging wildly, and the practical benefit of a change would be small against the cost of confusing the island's tourism, aviation and cruise schedules.

That stability is genuinely useful for an economy built on arrivals. Flight schedules, port calls and hotel check-ins all stay fixed against UTC, so the only variable is what the traveller's home clock is doing.

Regions and the airport question

Sint Maarten is divided into districts rather than provinces, and all of them share the capital's time. The island's airport, on the Sint Maarten side, serves both halves and the surrounding smaller islands, which means its published departure times are the single most consulted clock in the territory. Those times are always local — UTC−4 — and never adjusted seasonally.

Practical notes for planning: Confirm whether a quoted time is local or the traveller's home time. In summer, "3 pm" happens to be the same in Philipsburg and New York, which lulls people into assuming it always will be.

For recurring calls with Europe, expect the gap to change when Europe shifts, not when the island does. Use America/Lower_Princes in configuration files. A fixed "−4" offset is numerically right but loses the zone's identity and history.
