Castries is Saint Lucia's capital, main port and the arrival point for most cruise traffic. Its clock is fixed at UTC−4, which places the island four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time no matter the month.

For visitors this simplicity is useful. There is no changeover date to check against a booking, no ambiguous hour in the spring or autumn, and no risk of a schedule drifting because the island moved while a connecting flight did not.

Districts on a single offset

Saint Lucia is divided into districts named for its towns, and all of them run on national time. The list is short enough to walk through: Castries in the northwest, with the capital and cruise berths.

Gros Islet in the far north, including Rodney Bay. Soufrière on the west coast, beneath the Pitons. Vieux Fort in the south, home to Hewanorra International Airport. Dennery, Micoud, Anse la Raye, Canaries, Laborie and Choiseul around the coast.

Both airports — Hewanorra in the south and George F. L. Charles beside Castries — publish times in the same local hour, so a domestic transfer never involves a conversion. The Pitons take the sun off Soufrière well before the timetable says sunset. On this island, the mountains have the final vote on when evening starts.

The one moving difference

Because Saint Lucia holds still and North America does not, the gap to the US and Canada changes twice a year. This is the single most common source of scheduling errors involving the island. From November to March, Castries is one hour ahead of New York and Toronto.

From March to November, Castries and New York read exactly the same time. The UK is four hours ahead in its winter and five during British Summer Time. Barbados, Martinique, Dominica and the rest of the eastern Caribbean match Saint Lucia exactly, all year.

The practical rule: if a call is being set with someone in the eastern United States during the northern winter, confirm which end the hour belongs to. During the summer months the question does not arise.

Daylight on the island

At about 14 degrees north, Saint Lucia's day length is fairly steady — the longest and shortest days differ by roughly an hour. Sunrise and sunset shift by modest amounts through the year, and twilight is short, so darkness arrives quickly once the sun is down. Anyone planning a late afternoon hike or a drive on the mountain roads should count on losing the light faster than at temperate latitudes.
