Current time in San Juan
San Juan, on the northern coast, keeps UTC−4 year-round, as does every other municipality on the island and the smaller inhabited islands of Vieques and Culebra. There is no internal variation. The consequence most people notice is the shifting relationship with the US mainland. During North American standard time, Puerto Rico runs one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone. When the mainland moves to daylight time, the two align exactly. Nothing on the island changes; the gap opens and closes from the other end.
Why no daylight saving
Puerto Rico sits well south of the continental United States, close enough to the tropics that day length varies little between summer and winter. The seasonal argument for shifting the clock — long summer evenings worth capturing — simply does not apply with the same force.
The territory therefore stays on Atlantic Standard Time permanently, alongside a number of Caribbean neighbours that made the same choice. Half the year Puerto Rico is an hour ahead of New York, and half the year it isn't — without ever having touched a clock. The island is a fixed point that other people keep moving around.
Islands and municipalities
All of the territory shares one offset: San Juan and the metropolitan area — the northern coast and its suburbs. Ponce and the south — the Caribbean-facing coast. Mayagüez and the west — including the Mona Passage side.
The central mountains — the Cordillera Central municipalities. Vieques and Culebra — the inhabited offshore islands to the east.
Working between San Juan and elsewhere
Puerto Rico's business and legal life is closely tied to the mainland United States, and the twice-yearly realignment is a routine feature of scheduling. A recurring call that lands at nine in New York arrives at ten in San Juan for part of the year and at nine for the rest.
Recurring meetings should be set in the participants' local times, not in a remembered offset. Flight schedules already account for the difference — the printed times are local at each end. Deadlines set by mainland agencies are usually stated in Eastern time, which is not always San Juan time. Neighbouring Caribbean islands on UTC−4 need no adjustment at all.
