Current time in Maputo

Maputo, in the far south, is the capital and largest city. Its clock reads UTC+2, and so does every other place in the country. The IANA identifier is Africa/Maputo, one of the reference zones for Central Africa Time — several neighbouring countries' zones link to it directly.

The offset matches Johannesburg, Harare, Lusaka and Cairo in winter. It puts Maputo one hour ahead of Central European winter time and level with it in summer, which is a common source of confusion for European partners.

A long country on one clock

Mozambique runs some 2,500 kilometres along the Indian Ocean coast, but that length is mostly north-to-south rather than east-to-west, and a single time zone fits it comfortably. Latitude affects the seasons; longitude affects the clock, and Mozambique does not span much of it.

North and south, same hour

Pemba and Nampula in the north see the sun rise earlier by the clock than Maputo does, simply because they lie further east and north. The difference is real but modest, and nowhere near enough to warrant splitting the zone.

A country can be very long and still need only one clock, provided it has the sense to be long in the right direction. Seasonal variation in day length is small. Mozambique straddles latitudes from about 11° to 27° south, well within the tropics for most of its extent, so the swing between the longest and shortest day is limited. There is little for daylight saving to work with, and no history of adopting it.

Coordinating with Mozambique

Practical anchors for anyone working across the offset: Identical to South Africa year-round — useful, given how much business runs through Johannesburg. Against UTC, subtract two hours. The conversion never changes.

Against London: two hours ahead in winter, one hour ahead during British Summer Time. Against Central Europe: one hour ahead in winter, level in summer, because Europe moves and Mozambique does not. Against India, two and a half hours behind — relevant for the trade and shipping links across the ocean.

The European relationship is the one to watch on recurring meetings. A call set in January at a comfortable hour for both Lisbon and Maputo will land an hour differently in July.

Provinces and centres

Mozambique's eleven provinces all share the national offset; there are no local exceptions and no historical split to account for. The main centres: Maputo — capital, southern tip, main port Matola — the industrial city adjoining the capital

Beira — central coast, gateway for Zimbabwean trade Nampula and Nacala — the populous north and its deep-water port Quelimane, Tete, Pemba, Xai-Xai, Inhambane — regional capitals Distances here are the real scheduling constraint. Maputo to Pemba is a long domestic flight, but the clock at both ends is identical, so nothing needs adjusting on arrival beyond expectations about the journey.
