Mamoudzou, on Grande-Terre, is the capital and the busiest place on the island. Its clocks read the same as every other settlement in Mayotte — Dzaoudzi, Koungou, Sada, Bandraboua. The IANA identifier is Indian/Mayotte, and it maps to a fixed UTC+3.

Because Mayotte is a French overseas department, its administration runs on Paris paperwork but not on Paris clocks. Paris is UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer, so the gap between Mamoudzou and the mainland capital shifts twice a year without anything changing locally.

One zone, two islands, no exceptions

Mayotte is small enough that a single offset covers it comfortably. The territory consists of Grande-Terre, Petite-Terre and a scatter of islets, and the whole thing sits under one time zone with no regional variation.

Daylight saving and why it stays away

Daylight saving earns its keep at high latitudes, where summer evenings stretch and winter mornings collapse. Mayotte sits near 13° south, close enough to the equator that day length barely wanders across the year. Sunrise and sunset drift by a modest amount between January and July, and the sun goes down early even in midsummer by European standards.

Near the equator the sun keeps its own schedule and ignores yours. Moving the clocks would only insult it. France applies EU summer time rules on the mainland, but overseas departments are treated separately. Mayotte, Réunion, Guadeloupe and the rest each hold a fixed offset. So a call scheduled from Paris to Mamoudzou needs checking twice a year, while a call between Mamoudzou and Nairobi never does.

Working across the offset

UTC+3 puts Mayotte ahead of most of Europe and behind most of Asia. Some practical anchors for anyone coordinating with the island: Mamoudzou is level with Moscow, Nairobi and Antananarivo throughout the year.

Against Paris the gap is two hours in winter and one hour in summer. Against UTC it is always plus three, which makes conversions easy: subtract three. Against Réunion, a fellow French department in the same ocean, Mayotte is one hour behind — Réunion sits at UTC+4.

That last one catches people out. Two French territories, the same ocean, an hour apart, and neither of them changes clocks. The difference is simply geography: Réunion lies further east.

Mayotte is divided into communes rather than time-relevant regions, and the division has no effect on the clock. The largest by population sit along the eastern side of Grande-Terre, where the lagoon and the port shape daily rhythms more than any timetable does.
