Nouakchott sits on the Atlantic coast and keeps UTC+0, meaning local noon is 12:00 UTC. From the coastal capital to Néma in the far southeast, every settlement in Mauritania reads the same time.

Desert distances, one time zone

Mauritania is territorially vast, most of it Sahara. Crossing it takes a long time; changing your watch during the journey does not, because the country maintains a single offset from border to border. Administrative regions differ in almost every other respect, but not in the hour they keep.

Why zero offset is worth knowing

Mauritania's clock and UTC are the same number. For technical work this eliminates conversion entirely: a server log timestamped in UTC can be read directly as local time, and a scheduled task defined in UTC fires at the expected local hour. For ordinary scheduling it means the phrase "UTC" in a message from abroad needs no translation on arrival.

The most reliable clock is the one you never have to do arithmetic on. Nouakchott has one.

No daylight saving

Mauritania does not shift its clocks seasonally. The offset stays at zero year-round. As elsewhere in the region, the apparent difference to European partners changes twice a year — but the movement happens in Europe, not in Mauritania.

What this means when planning: The gap to London is zero in winter and one hour in summer. The gap to Paris is one hour in winter and two in summer. Nothing in either case requires action on the Mauritanian side.

Regional coordination

Several West African countries share UTC+0, so working across that part of the coast involves no conversion at all. Immediately inland and to the east, offsets increase, and to the northeast the situation differs again. Checking each partner's zone individually is quicker than assuming the region moves as one.

For travellers, arrival is uncomplicated: a phone set to automatic will show the right time, and a device left on UTC is already correct. The longer journeys inside Mauritania are measured in hours of driving, not in hours of clock adjustment.
