Lithuania is on Eastern European Time, UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer. Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and every county keep the same hour, and clocks change twice a year with the rest of the European Union.

The offset and the switch

Lithuania moves its clocks forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October. That puts the country one hour ahead of Central European Time year-round and identical to Latvia, Estonia and Finland at every point in the calendar.

Worth knowing: Lithuania's placement has not always been settled. The country spent a period on Central European Time before returning to Eastern European Time, which is why very old software configurations and archived schedules sometimes disagree with current ones. If you are reconciling historical timestamps, use the Europe/Vilnius zone rather than a fixed offset — the zone database carries that history; a hard-coded number does not.

A stored offset tells you what someone believed the time was. A stored zone name tells you what the time actually was. Only one of them survives a change of policy.

Counties, coast and the eastern border

All ten counties share the single national clock, though the country's east–west spread makes for a visible difference in light. Vilnius, in the southeast, sees the sun rise earlier than Klaipėda and the Curonian Spit on the Baltic coast — same figure on the clock, different sky.

Vilnius County — the capital and the political and financial centre. Kaunas County — the central hub, same hour. Klaipėda County — the port and the seaside, latest sunset in the country. Šiauliai and Panevėžys — the northern counties, bordering Latvia's identical zone.

Borders are a genuine consideration here. Latvia to the north matches Lithuania exactly. Poland to the southwest is one hour behind in both seasons. The eastern and southeastern borders lead into territory that does not use summer time, so the difference there depends on the month rather than being fixed — check before assuming.

Daylight through the year

At Lithuania's latitude the swing between midsummer and midwinter is large. June evenings in Vilnius stay light well past nine; late December brings dark afternoons that arrive before the working day is over. Summer time redistributes one hour of that; the rest is simply the season, and the national habit of long light summer evenings outdoors follows from it.
