Liberia is on Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+0, with no daylight saving. Monrovia's clock is the same clock used in every county, and it matches UTC exactly — which makes Liberia one of the simplest countries in the world to schedule against.

Sitting on zero

An offset of zero has a pleasant side effect: local time and UTC are the same number. There is no conversion to get wrong, no summer adjustment, and no ambiguity in logs, contracts or flight schedules. When it is 14:00 in Monrovia it is 14:00 UTC, in January and in July.

This was not always the case. For decades Liberia kept an offset that was not a whole number of minutes — an oddity inherited from local mean time in Monrovia — before aligning with GMT in the 1970s. It was among the last countries to give up such a fractional offset, and old records from before the change can be genuinely confusing to read.

Liberia's best contribution to timekeeping was giving up a clock that was almost three quarters of an hour off round numbers. Some traditions are better remembered than kept.

Counties on one clock

Liberia's fifteen counties share the single national time. The country spans a modest range of longitude along the West African coast and inland, so there is no practical argument for a second zone. Montserrado — Monrovia and the seat of government.

Grand Bassa — the Buchanan port area on the coast. Nimba and Bong — the inland north, same hour as the coast. Lofa — the northern interior toward the Guinean border. Maryland and Grand Kru — the southeastern coast.

Neighbours differ slightly. Sierra Leone and Guinea also use UTC+0, so those borders involve no change. Côte d'Ivoire is likewise on UTC+0, which means the whole stretch of coast around Liberia keeps a single hour — a rarity in a region of this size.

Working across the Atlantic and beyond

Because Liberia never shifts, the difference to Europe and the Americas is created entirely by their clock changes. The UK is level with Monrovia in winter and an hour ahead on British Summer Time. Central Europe is one hour ahead in winter, two in summer. On the western side, the US East Coast sits four or five hours behind depending on the season, so a Liberian afternoon reaches the American morning.

For anything technical, the zone identifier is Africa/Monrovia. Using it rather than a bare UTC+0 keeps historical dates correct, including those that fall before the alignment with GMT.
