Laos keeps a single clock: Indochina Time, UTC+7, with no daylight saving. Vientiane's hour is the whole country's hour — from the Mekong lowlands to the northern highlands, every province reads the same time all year.

One offset, no seasonal switch

Because Laos never shifts its clocks, the arithmetic you work out in January still holds in July. Seven hours ahead of UTC, every month. That makes Laos one of the easier countries to schedule against: there is no spring weekend where a meeting quietly slides by an hour.

The same offset is shared with Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, so crossing the Mekong at Vientiane or heading east toward the Annamite range costs you no clock change at all — only a border queue. The nearest change is to the north, where China's clock sits an hour ahead. The friendliest time zone is the one that never asks you to remember which Sunday it is.

Provinces reading the same hour

Laos is administratively split between Vientiane Capital and a set of provinces, and none of them keeps its own time. Sunrise arrives noticeably earlier in the east than in the west, but the clock does not follow the sun — it follows the national standard.

Vientiane Capital — the reference point for offices, banks and flight schedules. Luang Prabang — further north and upriver, same hour on the wall. Savannakhet — on the Thai border in the centre, no offset change when you cross.

Champasak and Pakse — the southern end of the country, still UTC+7. Xieng Khouang and the northern uplands — early light, unchanged clock.

Scheduling with Laos from abroad

Work backwards from UTC rather than from a city you half-remember. Laos is seven hours ahead of UTC year-round, so London on winter time is seven hours behind Vientiane and six hours behind during British Summer Time. Continental Europe on Central European Time is six hours behind in winter, five in summer — the gap moves because Europe's clocks move, not because Laos does.

A practical consequence: a Lao afternoon lands in the European morning, and Lao morning meetings are effectively unavailable to anyone west of Istanbul. If you need overlap with the Americas, the Lao evening is the only realistic window, and it will be the previous calendar day on the other side.

Travellers should note that long-distance bus and river timetables in Laos are published in local time only, without offset labels, which is unambiguous inside the country but easy to misread when you are booking from another zone.
