Yamoussoukro is the political capital, and its clock — like the whole country's — runs on the Africa/Abidjan zone identifier at UTC+0. Abidjan remains the largest city and the main economic centre, but on the matter of time there is nothing separating them.

The simplest possible arrangement

Ivory Coast has one of the least complicated time setups anywhere: a single zone, a whole-hour offset, and no seasonal adjustment. The country's time equals UTC exactly, which means no conversion is needed at all when working from a UTC timestamp. Server logs, flight times in UTC, and international coordination all read directly.

Zero offset, no seasonal change, one zone. If every country did this, half the world's meeting software would be out of a job.

Why no daylight saving

Ivory Coast lies close to the equator, where day length changes very little across the year. Sunrise and sunset stay within a narrow band from January to December. Daylight saving exists to move the clock against a large seasonal swing in daylight; where there is no swing worth speaking of, there is nothing to save.

Working across borders

Ivory Coast shares UTC+0 with several West African neighbours, and those gaps stay at zero permanently. Against the UK and Ireland, the time is identical in winter and one hour behind in summer, because they change and Ivory Coast does not.

Against Central European countries, it is one hour behind in winter and two in summer. Against the US East Coast, Ivory Coast is well ahead — its afternoon is the American morning. The recurring surprise for European partners is the summer drift. A colleague in Paris who is used to being one hour ahead finds themselves two hours ahead from spring to autumn, and nothing in Abidjan has changed. When the difference to a fixed-offset country appears to move, the movement is always on the other end.

Practical notes

Because the offset is zero, a UTC timestamp and Ivorian local time are the same number, which is unusually convenient for anything technical: no conversion step, no ambiguity, no daylight saving edge case at the boundaries of the year. For business scheduling, the overlap with European working hours is generous — the whole Ivorian working day falls inside the European one, with only a small trim at either end depending on the season.
