St. Peter Port is the capital and main harbour of Guernsey, and its clock is the clock of the entire Bailiwick. The zone identifier is Europe/Guernsey, which follows the same rules as Europe/London. In practice, if you know the time in London, you know the time in St. Peter Port — there has never been an hour of daylight difference to remember.

A Crown Dependency with a British clock

Guernsey is not part of the United Kingdom, and it is not part of France, although the French coast is close enough to see on a clear day. It is a Crown Dependency with its own government and its own laws. Its timekeeping, however, aligns with Britain rather than the Continent, which produces one of the more useful facts about the island:

Guernsey is one hour behind mainland France and the rest of Central European Time. It is on the same time as London, Dublin and Lisbon. The clock changes on the same dates as the UK, so the one-hour gap to France stays constant.

Daylight saving on the island

Guernsey observes daylight saving time. Clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday in March and back again on the last Sunday in October, matching the British schedule. During the summer months the island is on UTC+1; for the rest of the year it is on UTC+0.

Because the Bailiwick sits well north of the equator, the difference this makes is real. Midsummer evenings stay light late enough for a long walk along the cliffs, while December afternoons close in early. The summer shift moves an hour of daylight from an early morning nobody was using into an evening everybody is.

You can see France from Guernsey, but you cannot borrow its hour: the coast is twenty-odd miles away and sixty minutes ahead.

Ferries, flights and the hour that vanishes

Guernsey's transport links make its time zone something more than trivia. Sailings and flights connect the island with the UK mainland, with Jersey, and with France, and the last of those crosses a time boundary on a very short journey. A crossing that takes little more than an hour on the water can appear on paper to take two, or none at all, depending on the direction of travel.

Always read timetables as local time at each end — the departure in the island's time, the arrival in the destination's. Travelling to France, add an hour to your watch on arrival; returning, take it back.

Jersey and Alderney need no adjustment at all; the Channel Islands keep one clock between them. Around the March and October changeovers, check whether your journey crosses the changeover night itself.
