Current time in Basse-Terre

Basse-Terre, the administrative capital on the western wing of the main island, shares its clock with Pointe-à-Pitre, Les Abymes and every commune in the territory. There is a single offset here and no local variation to track.

The archipelago includes Marie-Galante, Les Saintes and La Désirade alongside the two lobes of the butterfly-shaped main island. All of them read the same hour.

An overseas department on Caribbean time

This is where Guadeloupe gets genuinely interesting. As a French department, it uses the euro, French administration and French law — but it does not use French time. It sits on the Caribbean clock, alongside its regional neighbours, and it does not follow the European daylight saving schedule.

The consequence is a gap to Paris that is not a fixed number: When metropolitan France is on winter time, the gap to Guadeloupe is at its smaller value. When France moves to summer time, the gap widens by an hour.

Guadeloupe itself does nothing on either occasion. Same passport, same currency, same paperwork — different hour, twice over. Administration travels further than the clock does.

Working between Paris and Pointe-à-Pitre

Anyone dealing with mainland offices from the islands lives with this twice a year. Some habits that help: Write meeting times with an explicit zone label, not just "heure française" — which one is ambiguous here.

Remember that the usable overlap of the working day shrinks when France is on summer time, because the mainland morning starts earlier relative to the islands. Check administrative deadlines carefully: a cut-off expressed in mainland time may land uncomfortably early in the Caribbean afternoon.

Neighbours and daylight

Guadeloupe shares its offset with several nearby territories, so island-hopping in the eastern Caribbean rarely requires a watch adjustment. Dominica to the south and Antigua to the north sit on the same hour.

Being deep in the tropics, the territory sees little seasonal variation in day length, which is the practical reason daylight saving was never adopted. The daily rhythm stays steady across the year regardless of what any calendar elsewhere is doing.
