Current time in Malabo

Equatorial Guinea observes West Africa Time, UTC+1, across all of its territory. There is no daylight saving, so Malabo and the mainland keep the same offset every day of the year.

An island capital and a mainland

Equatorial Guinea is unusual in shape. Malabo, the capital, sits on the island of Bioko in the Gulf of Guinea, while most of the country's land and population are on the mainland region of Río Muni, wedged between Cameroon and Gabon. There are also the smaller islands of Annobón, Corisco and the Elobeys.

All of it runs on one clock. The sea between Bioko and the mainland is a real separation for travel and administration, but not for timekeeping.

Ahead of UTC, close to the equator

UTC+1 puts the country one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. That is a notable arrangement given how close Equatorial Guinea sits to the prime meridian and the equator — geographically it is near the origin point of the whole coordinate grid, yet it keeps an hour of offset for regional alignment.

Being near the equator, day length here barely varies. Some consequences worth knowing: The offset stays at UTC+1 all year; there is no summer or winter time. Sunrise and sunset stay close to the same clock hours in every month.

Sunset arrives relatively late by local clock time, a side effect of running an hour ahead of solar noon. The rainy and dry seasons shape the working year far more than daylight ever does. Sitting almost where the equator meets the meridian and still keeping a one-hour offset is a fine reminder that time zones are drawn by agreement, not by the sun.

Provinces, and the languages of business

The country is divided into provinces across two regions: the insular region covering Bioko Norte, Bioko Sur and Annobón, and the continental region covering Centro Sur, Kie-Ntem, Litoral and Wele-Nzas. Every province uses UTC+1.

Spanish, French and Portuguese all hold official status here, a legacy of history and regional diplomacy. When arranging a meeting, the language of the invitation is often a more delicate question than the hour on it.

Neighbours and partners

Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria and Chad share UTC+1, so the whole immediate neighbourhood needs no conversion. Continental Europe on Central European Time matches Equatorial Guinea in winter and runs one hour ahead in summer, because Europe changes and this country does not.

The United Kingdom is one hour behind in winter and level in summer. Spain, a significant partner given the shared language, follows the same European pattern as above.

Questions and answers

What time zone does Equatorial Guinea use?

Is Malabo a different time from the mainland?
No. Bioko island, Río Muni and Annobón all use the same national time.
Is Equatorial Guinea the same time as Spain?
In winter, yes. In summer Spain moves an hour ahead, so Equatorial Guinea is then one hour behind.
