Current time in Quito
Ecuador uses two time zones. The mainland, including Quito and Guayaquil, is on UTC−5. The Galápagos Islands sit one hour behind at UTC−6. Neither zone observes daylight saving.
Mainland and islands
This is the detail that catches people out. Ecuador is a country of moderate size on the map, but it owns an archipelago roughly a thousand kilometres out in the Pacific, and that distance earns the Galápagos its own hour.
So a domestic flight from Guayaquil to Baltra crosses a time zone. Passengers land and set their watches back an hour, which is a pleasant surprise going out and a less pleasant one coming home.
Living on the equator
Quito sits almost exactly on the line the country is named after. At the equator, day and night stay close to twelve hours each throughout the year. Sunrise and sunset barely wander, and there is no season in which an extra evening hour of daylight could be manufactured by decree.
That makes daylight saving pointless here, and Ecuador does not use it in either zone. What this means in practice: The offsets, UTC−5 and UTC−6, hold every day of the year. The one-hour gap between the mainland and the Galápagos is permanent and never widens or narrows.
Evening light arrives at roughly the same clock time in June as in December. Any seasonal change in the gap to Europe or North America is caused by the other country. On the equator the sun keeps office hours: on at six, off at six, and it declines to be moved forward for anyone's convenience.
The provinces
Ecuador has twenty-four provinces. Twenty-three of them are on the mainland — the coastal lowlands, the Andean sierra and the Amazon east — and all share UTC−5. The twenty-fourth is Galápagos, the sole province on UTC−6.
Altitude does more to shape the feel of a day here than longitude does. Quito sits high in the Andes, where mornings are cold and midday sun is fierce; Guayaquil, on the coast at the same clock time, is humid and hot. The hour is identical; the day is not.
Comparing with elsewhere
Mainland Ecuador matches Peru and Colombia at UTC−5, so regional calls are straightforward. Against New York, mainland Ecuador is level in winter and one hour behind in summer, since the US shifts and Ecuador does not.
Against the UK, mainland Ecuador is five hours behind in winter and six in summer. The Galápagos is always one hour further back than any of the above.
Questions and answers
- How many time zones does Ecuador have?
- Two: UTC−5 on the mainland and UTC−6 in the Galápagos Islands.
- Does Ecuador observe daylight saving time?
- No. Neither the mainland nor the Galápagos changes clocks during the year.
- Do I need to change my watch flying to the Galápagos?
- Yes, back by one hour on arrival and forward by one on the return. Check your flight times carefully, as they are usually quoted in local time at each end.
