A single island, a single clock

Dominica is one island of roughly 750 square kilometres, and one time zone covers it entirely. Whether you are in Roseau, Portsmouth in the north, or a village in the Kalinago Territory on the east coast, the time is identical. Travel across the island takes a couple of hours by road and costs you nothing on the clock.

Why the clocks stay put

Dominica lies at about 15 degrees north. Day length varies by roughly an hour between the longest and shortest days of the year — nothing like the swing you get in northern Europe. Dominica is divided into ten parishes: Saint Andrew, Saint David, Saint George, Saint John, Saint Joseph, Saint Luke, Saint Mark, Saint Patrick, Saint Paul and Saint Peter. Time zones do not vary between them. What does vary is practical daylight — the island is mountainous, and a valley on the leeward side loses direct sun earlier than an exposed ridge, whatever the clock says.

A few points that shape scheduling here: Business hours generally follow a Monday-to-Friday pattern, with earlier starts than in much of Europe. Sunrise and sunset stay within a narrow band year-round, so an early call at a fixed local hour is always in daylight. The hurricane season affects planning far more than the clock ever does.

Working with North America

Dominica's relationship with the North American mainland shifts twice a year, entirely because of what the mainland does: In winter, Dominica is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time in New York and Toronto.

In summer, when those cities move to Eastern Daylight Time, Dominica matches them exactly. Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and most of the eastern Caribbean share UTC−4 with Dominica year-round, needing no conversion. Against the UK, Dominica is four hours behind in winter and five in summer.
