Time in Cyprus — regions, cities and time zones

Cyprus uses Eastern European Time, UTC+2, moving to Eastern European Summer Time, UTC+3, in summer. Nicosia, the divided capital, keeps this clock — and so, in practice, does the northern part of the island, though that has not always been the case.

Current time in Nicosia

Cyprus uses Eastern European Time, UTC+2, moving to Eastern European Summer Time, UTC+3, in summer. Nicosia, the divided capital, keeps this clock — and so, in practice, does the northern part of the island, though that has not always been the case.

An island one hour ahead of most of Europe

Cyprus sits at the eastern end of the Mediterranean, closer to the coasts of Turkey, Syria and Lebanon than to the European mainland, and its clock reflects that position. While most EU countries run on Central European Time, Cyprus is an hour ahead on Eastern European Time, in company with Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Finland.

The whole island keeps the same reading, covering: Nicosia (Lefkosia) — the capital, in the centre of the island Limassol and Larnaca — the main southern coastal cities Paphos in the southwest and Famagusta in the east Kyrenia and the northern coast

Daylight saving and a divided island

The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member and follows the EU daylight saving schedule: clocks forward in spring, back in autumn, on the union-wide dates. Summer puts the island at UTC+3, winter at UTC+2.

Time on Cyprus has a political dimension that few countries have to think about. The island has been divided since 1974, and the northern part is administered separately. Clock policy in the north has not always matched the south, which produced a period when crossing between the two parts of Nicosia meant changing your watch — an hour's difference within a single city.

Nicosia may be the only capital where the question "what time is it?" has, at moments in its history, required a follow-up question about which side of town you meant.

Working with the Cyprus offset

In winter, midday in Nicosia is 10:00 UTC; in summer, 09:00 UTC. Cyprus is one hour ahead of Berlin, Paris and Rome throughout the year. It is two hours ahead of London and Dublin. It shares its reading with Athens, which makes Greek-Cypriot business coordination straightforward.

The Middle Eastern neighbours are close in offset, so regional trade sits in a comfortable overlap. For northern European companies with operations in Cyprus, the practical effect is that the Cypriot working day starts and finishes earlier in their terms — a morning call from London lands mid-morning in Limassol rather than at the start of the day.

Time notation and daily rhythm

Both 12- and 24-hour formats appear in Cyprus, with the 24-hour clock standard in timetables and official use. Greek and Turkish are the island's languages, and English is widely used in business and tourism, so schedules are rarely ambiguous for visitors.

Summer heat shapes the day more than the clock does. In the hottest months, activity tends to shift towards the early morning and the evening, with a quieter stretch in the middle of the afternoon — the daylight saving hour effectively going towards a long, warm evening rather than an extra hour of work.
