Curaçao uses Atlantic Standard Time, UTC-4, all year with no daylight saving. Willemstad, the capital, keeps the same clock as the whole island. The offset never changes, which makes Curaçao one of the simplest places in the Caribbean to schedule against.

A fixed offset in the southern Caribbean

Curaçao lies off the coast of Venezuela, well south of the hurricane belt that shapes life on many Caribbean islands. It is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, self-governing in its internal affairs — but its clock has nothing to do with Amsterdam. Curaçao runs on UTC-4, several hours behind the European Netherlands.

The island is small enough that there is no question of internal zones. Willemstad, Westpunt, the industrial areas around the Schottegat harbour and the resorts along the southern coast all read the same hour.

The ABC islands and the neighbours

Curaçao shares its offset with a familiar cluster of places: Aruba and Bonaire — the other two ABC islands, also on UTC-4 with no daylight saving Venezuela, the nearest mainland, also on UTC-4 Sint Maarten, Puerto Rico and much of the eastern Caribbean

The Dominican Republic and several other islands that also hold a year-round offset Because none of these switch clocks, the relationships between them are permanently stable. A meeting arranged between Willemstad and Oranjestad works the same way in every month of the year.

Why there is no summer time here

Curaçao does not observe daylight saving. At roughly twelve degrees north of the equator, the island sees very little seasonal variation in day length — the difference between the longest and shortest day is modest, and the sun sets early enough year round that an artificial hour would not extend an evening in any meaningful way.

The consequence for planning is pleasant. When the European Netherlands moves to summer time, the gap to Curaçao narrows by an hour; when it returns to winter time, the gap widens again. All of that motion belongs to the Dutch end. Curaçao itself does not budge.

Living at UTC-4 with no summer time means never once wondering, on a Sunday morning in spring, whether you are an hour early or an hour late.

Practical points

Noon in Willemstad is 16:00 UTC on the same day, every day of the year. Curaçao and the eastern United States align for part of the year and differ by an hour for the rest, entirely because of US clock changes.

Papiamentu, Dutch and English are all in use on the island, and times are commonly written in 24-hour form following Dutch practice. Cruise arrivals and dive schedules are quoted in local time; there is no seasonal shift to correct for.
