Current time in Moroni

Comoros keeps a single time zone, East Africa Time (UTC+3), used across the whole country. Moroni, the capital on Grande Comore, shares that clock with every other island. There is no daylight saving, so the offset holds all year.

One clock for four islands

The Comoros archipelago sits in the Mozambique Channel, between the African mainland and Madagascar. Geographically the islands would suit a slightly different offset, but the country runs on UTC+3 throughout — the same reading you would get in Nairobi, Kampala or Antananarivo at that moment.

The islands under Comorian administration are: Grande Comore (Ngazidja) — home to Moroni, the capital and the largest city Anjouan (Nzwani) — the second most populous island, with Mutsamudu as its main town

Mohéli (Mwali) — the smallest of the three, centred on Fomboni Mayotte, the fourth island of the archipelago, is administered by France and is claimed by Comoros. It also uses UTC+3, so in practice a traveller moving between the islands never changes a watch, whatever the passport situation.

No daylight saving, ever

Comoros does not observe daylight saving time. This is typical of equatorial countries: the islands lie roughly twelve degrees south of the equator, where day length barely shifts through the year. Sunrise and sunset drift by a modest amount between the seasons, and moving the clock forward in summer would buy almost nothing.

For anyone scheduling from abroad, this is a convenience. The gap between Comoros and a country that does switch — much of Europe, for instance — changes twice a year, but the change comes entirely from the other end. Comoros itself stays put.

An island that never changes its clocks is not being stubborn. It simply lives close enough to the equator that summer never asks for the favour.

Working across the offset

Comoros runs three hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. A few practical consequences: When it is midday in Moroni, it is 09:00 UTC. Comoros shares its offset with East Africa, Madagascar and much of the Arabian Peninsula, which makes regional calls straightforward.

Callers from western Europe should expect Moroni to be ahead of them, with the exact gap depending on whether the European end is on summer time. Business hours on the islands run to a Friday rhythm shaped by the largely Muslim population, which matters as much as the offset when booking a meeting.

Reading the local clock

Times in Comoros are commonly written in the 24-hour format, following French administrative habit — French is one of the country's official languages alongside Comorian and Arabic. A meeting at "quatorze heures" is at 14:00, not 2 in the morning.

Because the islands sit south of the equator, the seasons run opposite to the northern hemisphere: the hot, wet months fall around the turn of the year. The clock does not reflect this in any way, which is precisely the point of a fixed offset.

Questions and answers

What time zone is Comoros in?
East Africa Time, UTC+3. The whole country uses it, including Moroni, Mutsamudu and Fomboni.
Does Comoros change its clocks for summer?
No. There is no daylight saving time anywhere in Comoros, so UTC+3 applies year round.
Is the time in Mayotte the same as in Comoros?
Yes in practice. Mayotte, administered by France, also uses UTC+3, so the clock reads the same across the archipelago.
