Same clock as New York — half the year
This is the detail that catches people out. From autumn to spring, when the eastern United States is on standard time, the Cayman Islands match New York, Toronto and Miami exactly. Then those places spring forward and Cayman does not, leaving the islands an hour behind for the rest of the year.
Nothing changed in Cayman. The rest of the neighbourhood moved. The Cayman clock is the one that stays where you left it. Everyone else's is the one that wanders.
Why a financial centre stays still
The islands host a substantial financial services industry, which means daily contact with markets in New York and London. A fixed offset has an obvious appeal for that kind of work: you learn the relationship to each counterpart once, and only have to remember which side of the year you are on.
Points that matter in practice: Against UTC, Cayman is always −5. No seasonal footnote, no exceptions. The gap to London swings between five and six hours depending on British Summer Time. The gap to New York is zero in winter and one hour in summer. Flights and cruise arrivals are published in local island time, which is the fixed one.
Three islands, one time
The territory has three inhabited islands and no internal time differences at all: Grand Cayman — the largest, home to George Town, Seven Mile Beach and most of the population. Cayman Brac — smaller, quieter, known for its bluff running the length of the island.
Little Cayman — the smallest and least developed of the three. Short inter-island flights connect them, and none of those flights crosses a time boundary. Whatever your watch says on Grand Cayman is what it says when you land on the Brac.
Daylight and the tropical day
Sitting in the Caribbean, the islands see relatively little variation in day length across the year. Sunrise and sunset shift, but not dramatically, which is part of why a seasonal clock change would deliver so little benefit. The argument for daylight saving is strongest in high latitudes where summer evenings are long and winter mornings are dark; near the tropics that argument largely evaporates.
The result is a place where "what time is it there?" has a stable answer, and where the confusion — when it happens — comes entirely from the mainland.
