An archipelago on one clock
Aland is an autonomous, Swedish-speaking region of Finland, sitting in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden. Geographically it is scattered — thousands of islands and skerries, most of them uninhabited — but administratively it is tidy, and its timekeeping is tidier still: one zone, no exceptions.
The interesting bit is the neighbours. Aland uses Finnish time, not Swedish time, even though Sweden is closer to hand for many islanders and the language spoken is Swedish. Sweden runs one hour behind. So a ferry crossing westward means putting your watch back an hour, and a ferry eastward to the Finnish mainland means no change at all.
Aland speaks Swedish and keeps Finnish time, which is a decent reminder that clocks follow governments, not dictionaries.
Daylight saving in Aland
As part of Finland, Aland follows the European Union's daylight saving arrangement. Clocks go forward in spring and back in autumn, on the same dates as the rest of the EU, and the changes happen simultaneously across the whole bloc rather than locally at each region's convenience.
In practice that means the offset alternates between UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer. If you are comparing Mariehamn to a city elsewhere in Europe, the difference between you probably stays constant through the year; if you are comparing it to somewhere outside Europe, expect the gap to move twice.
Light, not just time
Aland lies far enough north that the clock is only half the story. Summer days are very long and midsummer twilight lingers; winter days are correspondingly short, with the sun low and the useful daylight compressed into the middle of the day.
Mariehamn — the capital and main port, on the island of Fasta Aland Jomala — adjoining the capital, one of the more populous municipalities Finstrom — inland, in the centre of the main island Kumlinge and Brando — smaller municipalities out in the eastern islands
Eckero — westward, closest to the Swedish crossings None of these differ by so much as a minute. The outer islands are further from the capital in ferry hours than in clock hours, which is a distinction worth keeping straight when planning a visit.
Scheduling with Mariehamn
A few habits that save trouble: Treat Aland as Finnish time, whatever the language on the signage suggests. Remember Sweden is an hour behind — including during summer, since both shift together. Do not plan tight island-hopping connections around clock time; ferry schedules and weather matter more.
