Ilorin is the capital of Kwara State, in Nigeria, inland from the coast and south of the far northern cities. It does not keep a Yoruba hour, a state hour, or a capital hour of its own. Official clocks follow West Africa Time: one hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time, the same numerals as Lagos, Abuja, and Kano at every instant. If two phones in the city disagree, one of them is set wrong.
Computers usually store that offset as Africa/Lagos. The label is Nigeria’s zone file, named for the largest city. It does not send an Ilorin meeting to the lagoon. A form that offers Lagos, Abuja, or “West Africa” may be offering this UTC+1 — or it may not. Check the named zone. Present Nigerian civil time does not spring forward.
West Africa Time is built on the 15°E meridian. Ilorin sits well west of that line, so solar noon arrives after 12:00 on the wall. A midday break is scheduled on West Africa Time, not on the sun’s peak over the town. Both readings can be honest. Do not “correct” a watch to match a shadow in a courtyard.
Nigeria is one civil zone. A coach from Ilorin to Lagos, Ibadan, or Kaduna does not cross a time belt. It only spends hours you should actually count on the road. Kwara as a state does not get a savanna exception. School bells, radio, and government offices use West Africa Time unless a notice says otherwise.
Set phones to West Africa Time or to a Nigerian city such as Lagos or Abuja. Leave any summer-time toggle off. Nigeria does not currently use one. Pick Ilorin itself for sunrise, sunset, and weather, not a generic “Nigeria” pin.
Write “Ilorin (UTC+1)” on mixed invites so WAT is not read as a whole-coast slogan. WAT is a whole hour. Conversion errors usually come from mixing it with Greenwich Mean Time along the coast to the west. Ghana keeps UTC+0 under current rules. A call toward Accra needs arithmetic. A call toward Cotonou or Yaoundé should match on the hour. Do not treat “West Africa” as one number.
A Kwara capital is not a Kwara hour. The numerals are Nigeria’s. Harmattan dust is weather.
Sunrise and sunset here follow the date and Ilorin’s location. The city sits north of the coast and south of the Sahel, so the length of day stays closer to even than in a high-latitude capital, and still shifts through the year. The figures on this page are for this city’s coordinates. They are not a Kwara average, and they are not Lagos’s harbour dawn.
The listed dawn is when the sun’s upper edge meets an ideal horizon. Dust, harmattan haze, and rain-season cloud can hide that disk without touching the printed minute. Grey light useful for walking starts in twilight. Anyone on unlit roads should treat that fringe as part of the working morning, not as proof that the clock is late.
The weather block is the present condition over Ilorin. It is not a climate slogan and not a forecast you should treat as fixed for the evening. Heat at midday can make an outdoor start impractical even while offices run on West Africa Time. Rain slows travel without inventing daylight saving. Indoor meetings still start on UTC+1. Outdoor plans should start from the sky as well as the displayed time.
A standing call at 10:00 in Ilorin stays at 10:00 in Ilorin. A counterpart in London or Chicago may still shift their display twice a year. If the Ilorin slot suddenly feels early, their spring-forward is the usual culprit. Store the event as Africa/Lagos or as UTC+1 so only their display moves.
