How it counts
The gap between two dates is given three ways at once: in days, in weeks and days, and by the calendar — years, months and days. The calendar count follows real months, so one month after 31 January is 28 February, not 2 March.

How to use Date difference
Enter the earlier date in the first field. Enter the later date in the second field. Read the result. The gap appears in days, and broken down into larger units. Swap the dates if you entered them backwards — the size of the gap does not change.
Days, weeks, months, years — pick the right unit
Days are the only unit with a fixed size, which is why they are the honest answer. Weeks are just days divided by seven. Months and years are trickier, because months differ in length and years differ in whether they contain a leap day.
Days — use for deadlines, shipping, notice periods, anything counted. Weeks — use for schedules built around a repeating weekday. Months — use for rent, subscriptions and anything billed on a calendar date.
Years and months together — use when the number in days is too large to picture. A month is not thirty days. A month is "the same date next month," and the calendar has opinions about what that means at the end of January.
The two ways to count a span
There is an old argument hiding in every date gap: does the count include both endpoints, or neither? From the 1st to the 5th is four days of elapsed time, but five days if you are counting the days themselves — the way a hotel counts nights versus the way it counts days of your stay.
Elapsed days is the standard reading and the one most contracts assume. If you need the inclusive count instead, add one. Decide which you mean before you quote the number to anyone, because both are defensible and only one of them is what they asked for.
Where the answer matters
Notice periods, warranty windows, visa stays, project timelines, how long a document has been sitting unsigned. In each of these the difference between two dates is not trivia — it is the thing being enforced. Calculating it in your head across a month boundary is exactly where mistakes appear, especially in February.
The same calculation runs backwards for anniversaries and milestones: how long since something started, how long a habit has held, how long two dates in a record are apart.
Questions and answers
- Does the result include the start and end date?
- The day count is elapsed time between the dates. If you need both endpoints counted as days, add one to the result.
- What happens with a leap day in the range?
- It is counted like any other day. That is why a year-long span can come out as 365 or 366 days depending on where it falls.
- Why do months and days not divide evenly?
- Because months have different lengths. The breakdown counts whole months first, then the leftover days.
