How to use August

Use the grid to find the two dates that actually govern the month: any public holiday at the end of it, and the day the local school year resumes. Everything else in August bends around those. In several European countries the middle of August is close to a national shutdown, with a public holiday mid-month and much of the workforce away either side of it. Elsewhere the month runs almost normally. The difference is large enough that assuming either pattern across borders will cause trouble.

The shape of the month

Mid-August holiday — a public holiday on or around the 15th in a number of countries, often the quietest point of the year. Late August bank holiday — observed on a Monday in some countries, marking the informal end of summer.

School return — varies widely; some regions go back in mid-August, others not until September. Exam results — in several school systems, results and university admissions land this month. Southern late winter — below the equator August is the tail of winter, with the school year in its middle stretch.

August is when a deadline set in June discovers that everyone who agreed to it is somewhere with poor reception.

Restarting, not just resting

The second half of August is the most underused planning window in the year. The people who will make September's decisions are coming back, the inbox pressure has not yet resumed, and the work that requires uninterrupted thought can still be done. Treating the whole month as dead time and then arriving in September with nothing prepared is the common and avoidable mistake.

A useful split: use early August for whatever needs solitude, and the last week for setting up September — booking the meetings, confirming the dates, agreeing what the autumn actually contains before everyone's diary fills in a single afternoon.

Getting the handover right

Find the school return date for your region — it predicts availability better than any holiday list. Book September's important meetings during August, while diaries are still open. Confirm that anything paused in July has an owner for its restart, with a date attached. Check whether a late-month public holiday shortens the final week where you are.

Thirty-one days at the end of summer

August is named for Augustus and, like July, has 31 days — the pair that breaks the calendar's alternating rhythm and pushes the second half of the year out of step. One consequence is small but real: August and February always start on the same weekday in a common year, and the month's date-to-weekday pattern repeats only on a long cycle.

The more noticeable consequence is seasonal. Because August runs a full 31 days and summer weather in much of the north peaks in it, the month feels longer at the start than at the end. By the final week the evenings have shortened enough to notice, and the year has visibly turned without anything on the calendar marking it.
